Orginal Post: Roanoa: Hi, I'm a freshman in college and am going to be staying in Avon, NY for the summer. I will have almost noone to hang out with, or keep me occupied, and I figured that this would be an excellent time to reinvest myself in training. I'm close enough to school so that I could continue to train when school starts again. The problem is I don't know any schools in the area. Avon is a small town half an hour from Rochester. Does anyone have any advice? Even if it takes the form of "sorry man, no schools, but here is what you can do to train without a school" that would be great, if there even is a way to do it on my own with no school. I have taken a year of Aikido and some wushu before I had to leave for college, so I'm not exactly starting from scratch. So anyways. Are there any schools? If not, what do you think I should do?
Thanks,
Chris

Orginal Post: Thinman: I have a question on counter and attack methods. How to attack someone who is smaller but a very good wrestler who will most likely go for the legs for a take down to get on the ground. How is it possible to counter this to stay up on foot to fight hand to hand to the advantage of the stronger man?

Orginal Post: Dirty_Irishman: Anyone in the Springdale/Fayetteville area you have to check out Warrior's Way Martial Arts Academy. An absolutely amazing school, with real world training. And the prices are more than reasonable. Don't waste your time on the so called self defense lessons at the local fitness clubs. Come out here, trust me, I learned more in a week than I did in six months at a large TKD school. Kali and Silat are taught together, Muay Thai and Jun Fan are taught together, Sayoc Kali for the real warriors, children's classes specializing in self defense as well as character building, and other training available in private lessons. Give them a try, you won't be dissappointed.

Orginal Post: paperchaser: When I began studying applied martial arts over a decade ago, there seemed to be much more emphasis on preparing mentally for street encounters than there is today. It seems to me that nowadays there is far too much emphasis on the "best" techniques rather than learning to develop the mind of a warrior. Everyone is obsessed with Muy Thai, BJJ, Krav Maga or whatever the latest and greatest "superior art" of the week is. Nobody cares about visualization/meditation and mastering the sometimes debilitating effects of the fight-or-flight response. This despite the fact that throughout history hand-to-hand warriors have spent a significant amount of their training time on the mental aspect.
There used to be emphasis on breathing technique, on recognizing tunnel vision, controlling fear, dealing with the adrenaline rush and applying the techniques. It was often proven to us time and time again that the least skilled and least athletic fighter in the dojo who kept a cool head and stuck to his techniques could better defend himself than the best athletes that throw all technique out the window (or worse, freeze up and pee in their gi) when faced with a 2 or 3 man rush.
Don't get me wrong, there are still great people involved in the martial arts today and its nice to see that the "minimalist" arts are getting respect for their street effectiveness. But why has the mental aspect of fighting become so seemingly de-emphasized as of late? Is it just my imagination?

Something to think about................
If someone pulls a knife on you there are three aspects:
A trained fighter with a knife: You lose all day long, you could be the best fighter in the world, you aint controlling that knife.
The only time you may win is that you have a longer weapon or gun.
A muppet with a knife: These people hardly have any understanding of martial arts, so therefore when they commit an attack you have a chance of controlling the knife. They are not spitting at you or trying to rip your head off. They think one attack is enough.
A martial artist with a knife, not trained: Still fall into illusions and traps of misunderstanding body mechanics and simple movements. If i'm stabbing you to your stomach, you move off and take my arm with the knife. For controlling purposes.
Why not retract your arm and re-stab, why not use your other tools. I'm gonna be punching you with my free arm, biting you etc.
Ask yourself this question:
When you train in knife fighting is someone letting you do your technique, selling the illusion for money. YES they are.
If someone pulls a knife on you the rules have changed, their intention is to hurt you, you think one attack is gonna stop them. Have someone really go for you, with all the tools and move their feet right or left, How many people do you really stop??????
None without an advantage.

Orginal Post: BLACK PANTA: I've been thinking again. Alot of us here have always said, so and so art is very effective. For example I say TKD is an effective and great Martial Art. I've never trained in TKD, how do I know? If it's so effective, why dont I train in it? Most of us have said this without even training in the said art. How do you...(personally) know that it's effective? Why dont you train in the art?

Orginal Post: GrappleToWin: Has anyone here used a key lock in a real fight? Or any other locks besides armbars and such. Today before practice me and some friends were hmm how should i put this.... Rolling sounds good but we were striking with out gloves so basically real fighting cuz we were hitting as hard as we could and i easily took down my friend Colan whos a little bigger then me. I mounted him and of course he instantly tried to throw punches so I "went flat" chest to chest with him and put in a key lock I found it worked really effectivly because him being bigger and stronger and his Ego wouldnt let him think about my BJJ back ground....
I just wanted to know if anyone else has used any locks in a fight scenario besides the usual armbar/kimura....

I am currently doing kick boxing, (I think Birmingham uni has one of those), but would be interested in doing any other martial arts which would involve sparring. Actually i think I'd quite like to try Ninjitsu. Plenty of gymnastics and weapons, i think would suit me well too! What do ou guys think, anyother suggestions?

Orginal Post: GrappleToWin: More often then not in a real fight the fight goes to the ground. The person who is more comfortable on the ground is more likely to win, because either they have a wrestling, BJJ or any type of experiance with "tumbling". What im getting at is if their more adapted to striking on the ground what can the average person do to end the fight in their favor... From on your back you cant put trmendous power into your punches so why not try a choke.... Ive used a Guillotine Choke from guard in a real fight or 2 and just messing around with friends who dont know BJJ. The point is a choke is a very useful and quick fight stopper. If you've got you opponent in guard or shoot even if theyve mounted you but u can get a guillotine choke in deep the average fighter(meaning none trained) isnt going to no how to get out of it... From mount lol if you have a belt of u can do a ninja choke or a shaloin choke but we wont get into that....
Any one else got anymore choke variations that would work in a real fight? nothing complex just stuff that the average person looking for info could do with out any training and still have it be effective..
