Good afternoon. I am interested in studying at a mcdojo. Does anybody know of any in the R.I/CT. area? It would be appreciated.
PS: I read the starting mcdojo forum. Pretty funny. However, once I get my black belt in 6 months I will be the ultimate mcsensei in ri, so I will start one and anybody from this forum is welcome to attend free of charge (just keep it quiet). All others will cost $600 a month plus interest.

Is weapons training dead?Original Poster: zefffForum: OthersPosted On: 29-11-2007, 11:47Orginal Post: zefff: I laugh inside every time someone says, this and that style is the most effective. Usually people who involve themselves in such talk in this day and age (in my circles anyway), are always banging on about 'this style' of striking and 'that style' of grappling. It is like people forget the reason why our ancestors picked up sticks and stones in the first place!
What Im getting at is weaponry.
Are modern era MAists detatched from reality or is unarmed combat the biggest threat in civilised society? Maybe we need a new descriptive, instead of martial artist, martial athelete. Maybe it is me who is stuck in the past and maybe the atheletes can clearly define that their skill is just for sport???
For me weapons are the biggest leveller but I see a lot of martial atheletes and even TMAists who dont really see the significance of weapons training. I wonder if it is our relatively safe and policed society that has created a lack of regard?... |

Tai Chi...with my usual, occassional random twists:)Original Poster: GazelleForum: Kung Fu Styles, Chinese Martial ArtsPosted On: 28-11-2007, 19:22Orginal Post: Gazelle: I went to a Tai Chi class on Friday. I knew it was going to be chilled, but, my, was it! lol.
It was interesting, given i've never really done anything like it before. We did a form, a dance, stick hands, unbending arm, and another exercise, which i don't recall the name of.
I have to admit, i was rather pleased with myself, given that i was doing sticky hands with a girl who had obviously been doing it a while (the instructor was getting her teaching a fair bit), and i managed to unbalance her on a few occassions, and she only did me once:) (I'm not scoring, just observing:) ). And, i still remember the entire dance that we learned on the night (the bear), and the names of a lot of the stances...and that's even with trying dancing out after (excellent fun, by the way, we did waltz, cha cha cha, quickstep, and jive...my favourite, i think was the quickstep...people who know me thinks it suits my personality...but, they'll be starting new dances next week, foxtrot and samba, apparently quite difficult...we'll see :D ).
Anyhow...i think i'll keep it up for this term at least (they have odd sundays when there is a Kung Fu and Tai Chi thing, which is rather appealing to me:)), might get something out of it, in fact, i'm sure i will...gives me an insight into something a bit different...the instructor seems alright. Looks like he does a spot of yoga sometimes too, which is good...might pick up some new stretches :D.
I was wondering, Tease mentioned a difference between the Tai Chi exercise, and the martial art...what is it? I mean, i know the difference between a martial art, and an exercise, but, how did they split off, why? Shouldn't they be practised together? Aren't the exercises part of a persons development when doing the martial art? Otherwise, why would they have the same name?... |

ever not able to "see" the problem?Original Poster: bambooForum: Grappling & Jiu-JitsuPosted On: 19-11-2007, 02:37Orginal Post: bamboo: Last night starting from half gaurd I was tapped 6 times in row in an arm triangle from the exact same setup. Each time I watchedit happen as if I was not a real particpant but rather a casual observer from the ceiling above. I stayed calm, good breathing, time to think and each time he sunk it in and choked me out.
Eventually I called the instructor over and he watched as I was again choked out. He had me "talk it out", as in each step for my escape. Its funny, as I talked it through I realized that although I knew the step I was not actually doing them.
Amazing what you can learn about yourself when you stop and smell teh flowers.... |

Books/DVDsOriginal Poster: NeverManForum: Grappling & Jiu-JitsuPosted On: 05-11-2007, 15:33Orginal Post: NeverMan: How many people here supplement their training with either books or dvds or both?
I thought maybe people could share their opinions on certain books and dvds (what they thought were good, which ones to get, which ones to avoid, etc, etc). If there is already a thread out there for this feel free to delete/move this one please.
I recently purchased "The Guard" by Ed Beneville and Moriera. They also wrote "Passing The Guard".
I just got this book but it come with great reviews from Amazon.com buyers so I thought I would give it a try. Full of illustrations, focuses solely on the guard. Starts from fundamentals (exercises like shrimping, the snake move, etc) and then goes by section (escapes, sweeps, armbars and stacking, chokes, etc).
Like I said, I can't really give a full review as I just got the book, so has anyone else gone through this one? If so, what did you think?... |

Preparation for your first boutOriginal Poster: zefffForum: Mixed Martial Arts ForumsPosted On: 30-10-2007, 03:55Orginal Post: zefff: How did you prepare for your first bout? How long did you have to train for it? Did you focus on holes in your game or on what you do best? Did you have knowledge on your opponent and work a gameplan to that? Did it go to plan? Did you have a specific fitness program? Did you have to lose or cut weight or did you have to develop strength? How did you deal with preparation mentally? How did you react mentally to your win or loss?
Please explain! I was offered a semi-pro contest last night but injury has put that out of the question. But I imagine it musnt be long now until I am offered another but I know my game has a lot of holes, hence a lot of questions! :)... |

What really worries me is the idea of fucking nazis having a man to rally behind in the sport of mma. In my opinion something like this could really damage the image of the sport and fuel the arguement of mma being nothing but brutal violence. A little hatred makes for bad headlines.

Fedor has been signed by M-1Original Poster: bambooForum: Mixed Martial Arts ForumsPosted On: 16-10-2007, 08:56Orginal Post: bamboo: FEDOR COMMITS TO M-1
PRIDE Heavyweight Champion To Headline First Show Under New Ownership
By Loretta Hunt (

)
PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko has committed exclusively to the new ownership of M-1 Mix-Fight Championship, which has been purchased outright by an undisclosed American entertainment-related company, according to a source close to the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Established in 1997, the St. Petersburg-based M-1 held over 30 events under the ownership of Russian businessman Vadim Finkelstein, also the long-time manager of the much-sought-after Emelianenko. Finkelstein is also the proprietor of the Red Devil Sports Club, a facility and team that houses numerous Russian fighters, including PRIDE veteran Roman Zentsov and former UFC middleweight Andrei Semenov.
The source confirmed the new ownership has infused a substantial amount of capital into the organization. Finkelstein and others will stay on to assist in running the company, which will continue to promote under a variation of the M-1 name. The new M-1 will take more of a global stance, and Emelianenko (26-1) will headline its inaugural event as early as January or February, possibly in the U.S., the source said.
On March 27, Ultimate Fighting Championship majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta bought the assets of PRIDE, only to discover Emelianenko had previously signed a non-exclusive, non-transferable contract with its former owners, Dream Stage Entertainment.
As late as September, UFC president Dana White had insisted a deal with Emelianenko was imminent, though repeated negotiations between Finkelstein, colleague Apy Echteld and the Las Vegas outlet could not produce an agreement to bring the Stary Oskol resident to the famed Octagon. A major point of contention was White’s insistence Emelianenko sign an exclusive contract with the American promotion, which would exclude Emelianenko’s participation in Sambo competitions. Emelianenko is a three-time World Combat Sambo champion and ambassador for the sport in his homeland.
Undefeated in 24 fights (including one no contest), Emelianenko is widely received as the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter. The 31-year-old former Army firefighter rose to the top of PRIDE’s ranks by besting standouts like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (22-6-2). Emelianenko submitted 2000 Olympic Greco-Roman silver medallist Matt Lindland (20-5) at Bodog Fight “Clash of the Nations” on April 14 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has not competed since.
A formal announcement of the purchase, as well as plans for the new organization’s first event, is expected by the end of this month.

Aggressive or passiveOriginal Poster: bambooForum: Grappling & Jiu-JitsuPosted On: 12-10-2007, 18:32Orginal Post: bamboo: How do you roll- with aggression or very passively? Why?
When it comes to the takedown I am very passive. I never take a shot or work for the clinch but rather just let the person come to me, I find offbalancing and throwing quite easy when executed in a passive manner.
When we hit the ground I'm an entirely new person, I work hard for position and fight for the choke or sub. Because I train with alot of wrestlers this sems to be the norm among that group bu tthose with bjj training are always quite passive and wait for a mistake on which to capitalise.
I can see the logic behind this but simply can't bring myself to do it.

Non tappersOriginal Poster: bambooForum: Grappling & Jiu-JitsuPosted On: 05-10-2007, 01:48Orginal Post: bamboo: I just don't get the guys that refuse to tap when rolling.
Thursday I was rolling at the club and it was business as usual. At one point I rolled with a guy that was a little bulky in the torso, In an effort to stay mounted I grapevined him and then worked to sink in a key lock. WHen I got it and began to let go of the pressure he says -
"not yet", I put it back on and then just let go, this was silly.
Move ahead to saturday and hes not there, his buddy tells me he seperated his shoulder or something when we rolled. I was shocked.
Turns out this guy has a huge list of past injuries including a broken leg from rolling.
What the hell? You'd think surgery and broken bones would put a persons' pride in check.... |

UFC 76, Tavares vs GriffinOriginal Poster: zefffForum: Mixed Martial Arts ForumsPosted On: 01-10-2007, 09:29Orginal Post: zefff: I wasnt going to mention this but after watching the fight again I really cannot see how Griffin won the fight. He did a lot of good work and a draw would have been fair IMO but how did he win outright?
Tavares had a ridiculously huge amount of submission attempts and how many times did he get his back?..lets not forget the huge knee! The judge who gave 30-27 needs a kicking!
Tavares was the one looking to finish constantly, which was what allowed Griffin chances to escape - all Griffin did was control when he got position. I thought you got points for actively seeking submissions over the guy escaping them???
Seems to me Griffin and his camp has sway with the organisation or nowadays you catch a judges eye by stalling groundwork rather than trying to show genius abilities in it.
The fight was still awesome though! Best technical fight Ive seen in ages.... |

Should you conform to your weapon, or should your weapon be conformed to you?Original Poster: BLACK PANTAForum: Martial Arts WeaponsPosted On: 29-09-2007, 08:50Orginal Post: BLACK PANTA: As martial artists we spend countless hours practicing and developing our skills at specific weapons. Swords, knives, sticks etc etc. We learn how to use these weapons efficiently and skillfully. There are those that wield these weapons with great mastery, however they have put in decades of time, effort and sacrifice into honing their skill. When they were/are on the battlefield they are confident, precise and sure of every strike they make. However there are those that may never become proficient, at best they may only have a basic grasp of the art. This could be because they are intimidated by the weapon, they may find the weapon awkward, or simply they may find it to complicated. It could also be said that, they don't have the time or patience to learn and master the weapon.
Now some weapons came about by people finding objects/tools and learning to make them lethal,eg, Sai, Kama etc. But still they had to conform to the shape and create a use for the object/tool.
A view that I have is that it would be easier and more efficient if we make weapons to conform to us, instead of us conforming to the weapon. Make the weapon more ergonomic, in a sense. If weapons were made to compliment our bodies and conform to our abilities, then in theory, it would make the one wielding it more comfortable. Thus making the user more proficient and efficient. Instead of struggling to make our bodies move in a certain way, one can create a weapon that conform to it's users natural movements.... |

this Wing Chun I'm learning...
I have had - oh three weeks worth
(three sessions a week, 2 hrs/session - blimey 18 hrs!!! 8O )
The combinations of making the forms work as a defence, flowing into an attack, flowing into a block, flowing into a push...
I can do all the bits, but it's like fighting on mogadon - sooo veeeeryyy slow...
I'm sure I'll get better, and the forms and moves will click...
I know what I'm doing wrong, and I know where i need to get too... just my poor body can't keep up!!! :? :D
(remember - Relax - sink into your stance - Relax - think about the form - RELAX!!)
(this is fantastic for my son tho - one of the therapies for his DCD is to have a set of things to do, layered onto another set, layered onto another set - so Wing Chun which is forcing you to use both sides of your brain together, having complex actions, and chatting to your sparing partner - its just about perfect!!) :D... |

Dispelling some myths...Original Poster: 8LimbsScientistForum: Muay Thai Boxing - Thai Martial ArtsPosted On: 03-09-2007, 23:00Orginal Post: 8LimbsScientist: I just wanted to start this thread to dispel a prevalent myth about Thai boxing, but I figured I'd keep the title ambiguous in case anyone thinks up any other myths they'd like to bust.
The first myth is about conditioning your shins. You will hear from tons of so-called experts about how you can kick trees, smack your shins with hammers and sticks, and roll bottles up and down your shins. All of these techniques are not only incorrect, but dangerous. The only way to condition your shins safely is to kick a heavybag without shin pads and to spar with shin pads. Overtime they will become conditioned, but it won't happen overnight, nor should it. There are no shortcuts that are also healthy.
Also, there is this image of training in Thailand where all the Thai fighters kick trees. Well, a long time ago Thais used to kick Banana Trees, which are pliant and aren't as hard as the average trees we have here. Now, of course, if you visit a MT camp in Thailand you will see heavy bags, and Thais kicking them. You won't see any Thais kicking Oak trees or swinging baseball bats at their shins.... |
