Orginal Post: Sparky-bjj: Who uses them a lot/likes them a lot? I do! Wich ones are your favorites and whye? My favorites are the straight knee bar because you can go to toe hold if it fails. And the inverted heelhook: if your opponent tries a regualr heel hook on you and you can defend it well then he leaves himself open for the inverted heelhook if he keeps trying to go for the regular one. This is beatiful if it works! Furthermore heelhooks are one of the most efficient and dangerous submissions out there. You can use minimal strength for maximum result. What are th pros and cons of leglocks in an mma fight or in grappling according to you? I think the pros are that once you get hold of a leg there are numerous outcomes to win the fight you can go from heelhook, to knee bar, to toe hold and back! This is beautifully demonstrated by imanari. Another grat pro is that in an mma match once you get hold of a leg, you are far away from your opponents fists and it's difficult for him to hit you and to escape. Also demonstrated by Imanari. Another pro is that leglocks are just plain beautiful :) . A con is that if you go for a leglock and you're not carefull enhough you sometimes leave yourself open for leglocks from your opponent. Also you often end up in a bad position if you go for one. Anymore pros or cons? Where I train leglocks are frowned upon by most of my teammates. But I'm always training in them with one of my trainers who also loves them. They're my favorite submissions along with the kimura/americana and the rear naked choke.

I LOVE LEG LOCKS. Any leg lock. You could say I have a foot fetish.....um breaking them that is.>

Does anyonefrequently use the standard hip lock? I try it sometimes from sidecontrol, but it doesn't work that well for me.>

I am not much of a leglock guy. I know them and teach them, but I do not use them as part of my overall strategy. I practice defending them more than trying to catch people in them.
I also feel that alot of people use them as a crutch to not pass the guard.
I'm not saying everyone does that, but I see it quite often when reffing no-gi matches.>

I can see why you say it's used as a crutch. However leg locks, to me, is an art on it's own. Leg locks take as much strategy to set up like any other submission. It can be used defensively, offensively and as a set up.
Oh yeah and it's very much fun actually setting up a leg lock.>

That's true. I usually try to pass. But if the guy has a frustrating guard I often go for a toe hold or a heelhook. But that's the beauty of leglocks! You can act as though you're trying to pass the guard and then suddenly go for a toe hold. I believe in order to win the match, you just got to do what it takes. If you win by passing tha guard or getting the legock. It doesn't matter: winning is winning. Offcourse I understand your point, if you never ever try to pass and always go for a leglock this isn't good for your overall game. I tend to use the Imanari trick a lot. Instead of taking them down I try to grab the leg and then wrap my legs around his legs or just go for that weird Imanari-baseball-slide-leglcok setup. This works great when the your takedowns just aren't getting you anywhere.

You and me are on the same level :) Leglocks are, more than any other submission, a subtle game of chess.>

I'm in leaugue with Bushi on this one. I don't think that leg locks suck, I just don't personally use them that much. I use them more as a last resort, because I would rather pass guard.>
