Orginal Post: vladimir: I've always thought it wasn't lethal but recently have heard from some more knowledgeable people who said it was.
Post: Bushi:
It is not. Whoever told you that is retarded.
They probably believe in Dim Mak.>

I don't know much about anatomy but you're nose isn't a bone, it's cartilage so there shouldn't be anything to be "pushed" up. It would just smash you're nose.>

The Myth: If you punch the nose hard enough, the material in the nose will break off and stab the front of the brain killing you.
The Truth that caused the Myth: Any severe shock to the head can result in your brain bouncing around inside your skull, which can be lethal.
The problem is that even nurses and doctors who ought to know better buy into this myth claiming that they've seen people who get punched in the nose die. But, they've never taken apart the skull (for obvious reasons) to see whether or not the brain was punctured by a 'bone.' The moral of the story: Don't listen to doctors because they can be dumbasses, too.>
Post: samurai6string:
not to rape a dead horse here, but as mentioned before there is no "nose bone" just cartilage>

Thats right. Or most of us wouldnt be here. Too many movies keep people filled with useless bollocks.
Amen to common sense, which isnt so common these days.>
Post: MajorDanger:
There is a small bone above the ridge of your nose that the cartilage attaches to, but the skull behind it is too thick to for that bone to penetrate, it'd pierce your hand first. But as the above poster noted, the bouncing of the brain, known as coup-contracoup injury, can cause the blood vessels in the covering of the brain to shear and bleed causing increased intracranial pressure, herniation of the brainstem and death. However none of this occurs instantly, if some one was killed by the classic palm strike to the nose I'd look to see if the spinal cord was damaged by the neck snapping back, an injury to your 2nd cervical vertebrae is known as a hangman's fracture and causes the nerve that activates your diaphragm to be paralyzed. Just like when the hangman's nose snaps your neck.>

Would you be a doctor?>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
The physiology behind this myth is rather less dramatic than some might believe. When the nose is broken, the bony structures of the epimoidal sinuses (I theenk - can't be bothered to look up the anatomy text for the actual name, but they're the ones round about the bridge of the nose) can fracture. These structures are contiguous with the bottom of the brain pan (can't remember the scientific name of that bit offhand) and fractures can spread to this region, which can expose the brain cavity to the outside environment and possibly lead to contamination and infection. Not quite the instant death spoken of in the urban myth, but still potentially dangerous.
Still, I wouldn't want to lead with my nose in a fight, all things considered :D>
Post: Green Dragon:
If the force was extreme enough to cause the neck to crack back then a broken neck is possible, unlikely but still possible. Other possible factors are a broken nose which hurts like hell, while the cartillage can't brake the nose bride can which IS bone, plus just being punch in the nose under any circumstance actually does hurt like hell and makes my eyes water.>

All right , mental masterbation aside....
The burden of proof is on those that say it can happen. We need documented cases- medical journal, police report, etc....
Any takers?

Post: Headcrab:
The nasal spine is a small needle like bone that starts near the center of the eyes, because this bone is very skinney, it can be broken easily.
But it is very hard to shove it into the brain, it would take more force then it would take to kill someone from head trauma, because it has to go in and then up >

"because the bone is skinny, it can be broken easily?"
i don't think I've heard anything so stupid in a long time.>

HAhahaa Ive got such a huge backlog of stupid I just dont know where to file that right now.>

It's alright, zefff, I'll file it for you  I'm starting to build up a collection myself>

Unfortunately, all of you are missing the truth!!! As NB and I can attest, both being Semites, one from Ishmael and the other from Abraham, our noses are deadly weapons when wielded properly and, given the pronounced protrusion of our cartilege and the relative proximity of our brain to our lowered foreheads, which occur due to the downward pressure of the chi points and meridians toward our nose, in our case a palm strike to our nose will, in fact kill us or, even worse, cause our mothers to come back to haunt us!!! Oye, the guilt of the broken nose and the resulting plastic surgeries.
On the other hand, ripping out the eye as executed in Kill Bill 2 can cause some really serious issues, besides being grossed out....eeewwwww!!! That Pa Mei, what a funny guy!!! 8) :P>
