Orginal Post: inssane: Hi!
I'm Nick and new to this board. I do not have much martial arts experience (1 year TKD several years ago). I don't have much time to take formal classes unfortunately because I do like to lift in the gym too.
Anyhow...
I am very interested in joint locks as well as pressure points for self defense.
I am only 5'7 and a solid 165lbs, but as other shorter guys/gals may know, if you do not know what you are doing in a fight a taller person can be a difficult task :)
If there are certain how-to sites I can visit, reputable and with good explanations please either post them or PM.
Otherwise I will look around this site, looks very informative so far.
Thanks!@!
Nick

Forget it! You will find a list of descriptions with pics for moves but you wont have proper insight into their application, flows, openings and counters. You will end up with a jumbled mass of half-cooked techiques and wont know which to use and when without engaging your brain. They will never become instinctive with good relaxed flow and effectiveness and you will never see the bigger picture behind the trechniques unless you spend time with a good instructor.

I know because I am a striker who has learnt a couple of tricks outside my game and later on learnt that a little knowledge can be more dangerous.

If weights are most important to you then stick with that cos at least you can just rely on your mass to shove or slam someone. You know your strength and how to use it. You will never know technique from a book or website alone IMHO.>

Post: dscott:

First off, Welcom to the forum. I hope that you don't turn into a troll like recent newbies (I have a feeling that you won't though....so don't make me eat my words)

I agree with Zefff. You're not going to learn anything useful through books, videos, pictures, etc... without first going to classes. You have to learn things through interaction with instructors and students. Once you've learned that, then you can read the books and watch the video and those will help you. But you need to join a school first.

If you're looking for joint locks and pressure points, try a small circle jiujitsu or aikido school. Those arts also don't rely on your size, they use their opponents size against them.>

Inssane -

First off, welcome to the forum...

Second - you won't learn shit properly from watching a video. There are certain things you just can't learn, see or feel - videos won't give you any of this. You're best bet is to try and find an Aikido or Ju Jitsu class that you can take on your schedule. Another alternative is to become friends with someone who is in the class and ask them if you can practice with them. They will be more than happy to have a training partner outside of class and you will learn the same techniques they're being shown.

Finally, thank you for not asking some stupid question such as "I've never been in a fight, how do I kick ass?" or "I've never been in a fight, what's the best way to knock someone out?". By avoiding these questions, you have just raised yourself up a notch in my book. You're now at - one notch. Just make sure you avoid asking stupid questions or I'll own you like a $2 whore on payday!!!

Enjoy your stay...>

Thanks Huggy Bear...lol
Yeah I will have to look into that. I am from Chicago...any suggestions on schools or should I post separate in proper forum?
Anyhow, thanks for the advice. I just have to find a school with a good gym too.

Glad to see that you also have a good sense of humor... :D

By the way, mad props for catching the Starsky and Hutch remark!!! >

Post: zefff:

Maybe some kind of MMA type gym might have the facilities you are looking for with decent weights apparatus for you to train alongside the clinch and ground control instruction combined with some solid striking. You might find you'll love it if you give it a try!

Sorry I cant help with gyms in US but good luck mate!>

Post: inssane:

MMA please???>

Post: angryrocker4:

Mixed martial arts, like UFC. More often its muay thai and Bjj as that's the real popular stuff right now, though it can be anything thats a mix of stand up and ground. I've just added MMA to my budo taijutsu and powerlifting and having the time of my life. You can do a google search and you should be able to find listings.>

Post: WushuPadawan001:

Shouldn?t be hard to find a good school is Chicago.

I?d recommend looking into an Eagle style Kung Fu school (plenty of locks and grabs in that system, or anything with Chin Na really). Dim Mak (sp?) would give you a lot of pressure point skills. Of course, you may not be interested in Chinese martial arts.>

Post: Tease T Tickle:

Chicago has a lot of good schools. We've had members from the area before and I'm just over in Detroit, so I've had the chance to visit some Chicago schools in the past. It violates my principles to actually endorse a specific studio or instructor, so I can't do that, but I do know of a VERY good jiu jutsu studio in the burbs of Chicago. If you can find it, you'll enjoy it.>

This is going to sound a bit ridiculuos, as i'm guessing i probably shoulod know by now, but what on earth do you mean by a 'troll'?>

Post: WushuPadawan001:

A troll is someone who comes onto the forum and does little more than annoy other users. For instance, a troll might say something along the lines of, ?Has anyone ever been hit by a bagpipe,? only to further make assumptions that a user is, ?A son of a *&$% mother *&^%$#@ &**muncher,? and follow by accusing someone of being homosexual.

No worries Gazelle, you?re about as far from being a troll as they get.>

Post: Gazelle:

I appreciate that WushuPadawan001.>

Post: nbotary:

Ben - Dude, why'd you leave out all the letters?!?! I swear, one of these days I'm going to accomplish my goal of corruption with you!!!

Gazelle - you have to actually qualify to be a troll by typing in "internet speak" i.e. using all the shortened and phonetic words that pre-teen kids use when they think they're being cute. So, unless you're about 12 and you post some absolutely insane crap that has nothing to do with anything, then you can't be a troll. The only other way to qualify is to be voted into trolldom.

By the way, a lot of us like to poke fun at each other in here, feel free to join in... if you dare!!!  >

Post: Gazelle:

I'm a few years older than 12, precisely 6 years older, despite what you may have thought from my post about my father and posting my picture, in that 'learning staff' topic. He's rather protective over me, and as i am still living in his house, i could really do without the hastle, plus it's kind of a respect thing, he and my mum have given up a lot of their time for me, it's only fair if i repect it. Anyway, thank you for the invitation, and if i do dare at any point i may join in on occasions, but as it stands i'm not exactly well practised at such things! I used to be really quiet, and i spent a lot of time on my own because i wasn't in school much so i'm not really well versed in friendly banter.
I hope that doesn't count as 'insane crap', but if it does, well, i can't do anything about it now.>
