Orginal Post: paperchaser: I noticed walmart carries many brands of work-boot/shoes with steel toes. I actually already have a pair of workboots with steel toe (has actually saved them a few times from falling items) but I noticed they sell casual/gym shoes with the steel toes as well. I mean, they look like everyday shoes and won't draw attention. And at $25 you can't go wrong?
Anybody wearing them? I mean the steel toe would be nice for kicks to the shin/groin, but the shoes are heavier and after all, you have to wear them everyday. Thoughts?

Might be handy for shins, but can you run in them? I would stay with comfortable shoes.>

If your foot is stomped wearing a steel toed shoe (not boot) , like the cheap ones from walmart, the little plate over the toes collapse onto your own foot.
It hurts like hell.
There is a reason construction workers use boots and gardeners use shoes. One drops soil and a pot, the other concrete and power tools.

You can buy steel toed running shoes, dress shoes etc. etc. that are rated just as highly as steel toed work boots. Granted these aren't 25 bucks, but I have a pair of steel toe running shoes which I used to wear when I worked construction for a little while and they aren't super heavy and the plate in them has the same rating as approved boots. There's no way it will collapse from someone stomping on my foot unless they weigh hundreds and hundreds of pounds lol.>

I work in construction and I can tell you that steel toe work boots aren't recommended for some applications. If you're work surface is concrete, then they're fine. If you're work surface is soil, asphalt, something softer than concrete, then you worse off. If something falls on your foot with steel toe boots on a soft surface, your toes could get sheared off because the steel plate could go into the surface. If you're on a concrete slab, you're fine though.
Either way, I don't think that Walmart steel toe sneakers are OSHA approved and I wouldn't wear them for construction/safety purposes.>

They would probably be a lot more of hassle than anything unless you get into a lot of fights.>
