Orginal Post: JCSamurai: I was at a dojo "Perhaps a Mcdojo but not sure"? and the "Soke" Sensei
Told his students that he has modified thier style to fit the needs of today.
He went on to say that the warriors of yesterday didn't have problems like we do today (Gang fights, bottles, knives, etc. etc. etc.), so their techniques wouldn't work today like they did yesterday.
Somehow to me that sounds a little Hoke to me??? Anyone care to elaborate?

Well, and you'll love this, it depends on where you look.
The Filipino martial arts still use sticks and knives because Kali/Arnis/Escrima have been used by and against street thugs for goodness knows how long. Krabi Krabong lost its weapons training and became Muay Thai because they stopped fighting with spears and swords. Modern schools for karate and kung fu only use weapons in demonstrations of forms, if at all, because - again - no one fights with swords anymore.
Depending on what this guy's style is, he could be very correct or very wrong. If he's pushing some kind of karate, and teaching you to knife fight, it's probably a good thing. If he's pushing Kali techniques and calling it LameWad's Kung Fu, then he's probably a cockweasel and should be treated as such.
The idea that people in the past never dealt with multiple opponents, weapons, groundfighting and all the other "new" ideas in the martial arts world of today is really just dumb, but some modifications to the arts made in the past century or so, ought to be remodified because times do change. If you studied karate a hundred years ago, chances are you didn't get into street fights and you wouldn't need the edgier stuff some schools do now, but if you were training in karate in Okinawa a few hundred years ago, you probably used your skills to save your life against Japanese imperialists. Today, if you train in karate, you probably use your skills to gain bragging rights for internet forum cockfights. Food for thought.>

I hear ya Tease I just think I might be coming from the angle of the Samuari "My favorite Warriors" These guys had no problems chopping of heads or limbs, And they knew that their next fight could be their last, and if so then no problem, because to die in battle is glorious.
There was no fear at all which I think made them sooo ruthless.
Think about this, when they fought, somebody most likely wasn't going home that day, not alive anyway!!!!
But then again I may just be seeing things one sided.
By the way his style was a mix of Karate, ju-jitsu and something made by another guy.>

Martial arts evolve with the times. Then again, many aspects of the martial arts are timeless. Some would argue that it is necessary to preserve the most ancient characteristics of the martial arts. Kind of a conundrum isn?t it?>

You also have to remember certain things, such as how certain ryu and waza were normally performed in armor, so they would be more applicable today in heavy body armor such as an RBA or the newer interceptors. The traditional stuff is still very useful, as you learn (or are supposed to) the principles of the technique and why it works and all that instead of the technique itself. How often in a real fight, not sport or competition, no matter the time period, are you going to be able to pull off a text book technique exactly? Very rarely.
We have the same problems now as they did then. we have more technology and better porn, but other than that......>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
plain and simple we MUST look to the past to learn. We prepare for the future, so we develope/expand.>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
To expand, I dont think when the fighting systems of the past were being created they ONLY looked at their immediate time/place. Sure that was a main focus, but I believe they also prepared for the future. So there is an "evolution" of fighting. IMO That evolution is needed.>
