Orginal Post: NeverMan: It seems that Yawara (the board) is from a lot of "handshakes" and "wrist grabs". I understand that Yawara are the fundamentals (or part of them) and that this is needed to fully understand, appreciate and apply finer points of Jujitsu, however, can anyone think of a time when you might have actually used any of these techniques in a fight/comp/tourney and from what position did you actually begin to apply it?
I guess my question is this: None of my fights have ever started from a handshake or wrist grab. I also understand the tradition of stopping an opponent from drawing a weapon with a wrist grab in feudal japan, but that doesn't happen too much today.

There's a school near me that sounds very interesting that I'd like to at least find out more about, but I couldn't even visit it right now because beyond basic McDojo detection I would have no idea whether it was legitimate. I remember seeing this discussed before, but I couldn't find any of the threads about it and I'm guessing they've been deleted. If anyone has a link to a third-party source that has some useful information, that would be great as well. Thanks.

Orginal Post: Sparky-bjj: In professional sumo there are no weight classes. Do you guys think it should stay like that or that it should change? I ask this because in amateur sumo there are weightclasses sometimes.
I for one think sumo should stay like it is and always has been: without weightclasses. It's an integral part of the sport of sumo to try to gain weight to compete more effectively, and that's how it should stay. With weighclasses the factor of gaining weight becomes a lot less important. And in my opinion with the adding of weightclasses sumo may attract more people, but it just isn't really sumo anymore. Besides it's really cool to see really heavy guys like the former sumo champions Konishiki or Musashimaru taking on lighter, faster opponents. What do you guys think?

Orginal Post: Sparky-bjj: I've always thought that in order to be accepted in a sumo stable you have to be at least 5'8" high and you have to weigh at least 165lbs. But Toyonoshima is smaller than that and he's a professional sumo (maegishara status). Does anyone know if these requirements have changed? Or that an exception was made for Toyonoshima or something? Or was I just misinformed about the requirements to enter professional sumo? I was thinking that maybe certain heya don't use these requirements. Any info is appreciated.

Orginal Post: dojutsu: Now forgive me because i know hardly anything about japanese martial arts, but i decided to start reading into them out of curiousity.
I saw a brief mention on sutemi waza, or the "self-sacrifice"throw (or something like that) and it basically said that it places the user in a "disadvantagous" position after the throw. Is this strictly true?
Now having not seen any sutemi waza throws, and as i dont know anyone into the japanese arts, i was wondering what use anyone on here found for such a type of throw.
Is it a good set up for groundwork or something?

The website is pretty vague and doesnt really give much detail on the art itself, but seems more interested in showing off what magasine covers its founder has been on. Here it is:
http://www.ty-ga.co.uk/index.htm
Also it shows 1st Dans with only 3 years training, which seems a very short amount of time to me when i compare it to my ju jitsu which takes about 10 years.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes, the past seems cooler than the present. But I understand what you say, so thanks for the advice an' all. It really helps.
Also, I managed to get myself a copy of "A Book Of Five Rings". I finished reading it (I'm a fast reader, plus the book wasn't too long), and I guess I understood most of it. Fairly philosophical stuff too, so I enjoyed it as well. I just didn't truly get The Book of Void. Could you help elaborate on that?
