By the way - I´m new on here, and just thought I´d give you a few details about me: I´m 28, from a traditional karate background, though a few years ago I boxed for around six months - and was very impressed with WB. Now I´d like to try kickboxing for fitness and self-defence.

Orginal Post: The BadBoy: Explosive Punching & Aggresive Defence

1. Explosives at Toledo

What would happen if a year-old baby fell from a fourth-floor window onto the head of a burly truck driver, standing on the sidewalk?
It's practically certain that the truckman would be knocked unconscious. He might die of brain concussion or a broken neck.

Even an innocent little baby can become a dangerous missile WHEN ITS BODY-WEIGHT IS SET INTO FAST MOTION.
You may feel as helpless as a year-old infant-as far as fighting is concerned; but please remember: (1) YOU WEIGH MORE THAN A BABY, and (2) YOU NEED NOT FALL FROM A WINDOW TO PUT YOUR BODY-WEIGHT INTO MOTION.

You have weight, and you have the means of launching that weight into fast motion.

Furthermore, you have explosive ingredients. You may not appear explosive. You may appear as harmless as a stick of dynamite, which children have been known to mistake for an oversized stick of taffy.
You can launch your body-weight into fast motion; and, like dynamite, you can explode that hurtling weight against an opponent with a stunning, blasting effect known as follow-through.

Incidentally, mention of the baby and explosives reminds me of what happened at Toledo on the afternoon of July 4, 1919.

Standing there that day under the blazing Ohio sun, I felt like a baby as I glanced across the ring and saw big Jess Willard shrug off his bathrobe in the opposite corner.

Cowboy Jess was heavyweight champion of the world, and he was a giant. Moreover, he was a perfectly proportioned giant. He was every inch an athlete. He tapered down beautifully from derrick-like shoulders, and his muscles were so smooth you could scarcely see them rippling under his sun-tanned skin. He towered six feet, six inches and a quarter. He weighed 245 pounds. In comparison I shaped up like an infant or a dwarf although I nudged past six feet and scaled 180 pounds. My weight was announced as 187 pounds; but actually I registered only 180.

As I looked across the ring at Willard, I said to myself, "Jeez! What a mountain I've got to blast down this time!"

I knew about blasting-about dynamite. I had learned about dynamite in the mines of Colorado, Utah and Nevada, where I had worked off and on for about six years. And I knew plenty about dynamite in fighting. I had made a study of fistic dynamite since I was seven years old. That was when I had my first fist-fight, with a boy about my own size, in Manassa, Colorado. I was born at Manassa and spent my early years there.

Before I fought Willard, my manager-Jack (Doc) Kearns-already had nicknamed me "Jack the Giant-Killer" because I had belted out such big fellows as Carl Morris and Fred Fulton. They were big men all right, but neither had appeared such an awesome giant as Willard did that sweltering afternoon.

I had trained for Willard at the Overland Club on Maumee Bay, an inlet of Lake Erie. Nearly every day Kearns and Trainer Jimmy Deforest reported that I was shaping up much better than Willard.

But when I saw big Jess across the ring, without an ounce of fat on his huge frame, I wondered if Kearns and Deforest had been bringing me pleasant but false reports to bolster my courage. I won't say I was scared as I gazed at Willard, but I'll admit I began to wonder if I packed enough dynamite to blast the man-mountain down.

Since this is not a story of my life, I'll refrain from boring you with details of the fight. I'll wrap it up in a hurry; I'll merely recall that I sent Jess crashing to the canvas six or seven times in the first round and gave him such a battering in the third session that Jess was unable to come out for the fourth round. As Willard sat helplessly on his stool in the corner, his handlers threw in the towel just after the bell had rung to start the fourth. I won the world heavyweight championship on a technical knockout.

I won the ring's most coveted title by stopping a man much larger and stronger than I was-one who outweighed me 65 pounds. I blasted him into helplessness by exploding my fast-moving body-weight against him. I used body-weight, with which the falling baby could knock out the truck driver; and I used explosion.

EXPLODING BODY-WEIGHT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT WEAPON IN FIST-FIGHTING OR IN BOXING. Never forget that! I was at my peak as a fighter the day I met Willard under the broiling Toledo sun. My body-weight was moving like lightning, and I was exploding that weight terrifically against the giant. Even before the first round was finished, Willard looked like the victim of a premature mine blast.

Styles, Strategies and Mechanics of Boxing

Orginal Post: The BadBoy: This kind of comes from the Question of the week thread. But not quite. Umy if you feel this would be better served in the Boxing Q&A then please delete and put it in there.

Every fortnight or so I will try to put up a heading regarding a certain aspect of boxing. Until the next heading goes up I would Like everyones thoughts and ideas as relating to that particular subject. Actually now that I think of it I think that I will let the dialogue continue till it dies and then put up the next heading.

I'd like to dicuss different styles of boxing the success these styles have had and why. Also I'd like to discuss strategies to use in boxing, and ofcourse the base mechanics of the techniques etc.

So let's start...

Base

As in practically all types of combat arts, the base is one of, if not, the most important part of the fighter?s make-up. With boxing too it is very high up the list; the fighter must have a wide (yet not uncomfortably wide) base, with a tendency to shift his weight from leg to leg trying not to become too static. The rear leg should be used like a spring; therefore the rear foot should be carried on the toe, with the knees slightly bent. The rear foot should also not be too far to the rear of the body, but practically underneath. The front foot moving forward, away from the body carries out the widening of the base. Remember power is generated from the legs, so it is imperative for the base to be correct; the biggest fault with novices is to carry the rear foot too much in line (when looking from the front) with the front foot. This creates problems when throwing the rear hand in power (lack of) and distance.

I know this is kinda covered in the Q&A but those are the opinions of the boxers. Here I would like the opinions of anyone who has one. Thanks and please discuss.

How Professional Boxing is Scored

How Professional Boxing is Scored
Find out the criteria the judges use to pick a winner in a professional boxing match, calculate scores yourself, and see if they match the official results.

The vast majority of professional boxing matches are scored using "the ten-point must system." Under this system, three judges independently score each round. Typically, the winner of a round is awarded ten points, and the loser receives nine or less, depending on his or her performance (10-9). If a judge determines the round to be a tie, both of the boxers get ten points (10-10). Each judge records his scores on a scorecard. All the scorecards are totaled at the end of the match, and the boxer with the most points wins.

The Ten Point Must System
Each judge scores each round using the following criteria:
Clean Punching (25%)
Effective Aggression (25%)
Ring Generalship (25%)
Defense (25%)
Clean punches are above the waist, on the front or sides of the body or head, and with the knuckle of the glove. The judge must determine if one boxer is landing more clean punches than the other.
Effective Aggression means landing punches while moving forward. If a fighter is aggressive but not landing punches, that does not count as effective aggression.

Ring Generalship means who is controlling the action in the ring, using strategy and skills beyond straight punching power. Is one fighter using agility and feinting to throw his opponent off guard? Or setting up his opponent for effective combinations? When one fighter moves the other around the ring at will, that fighter is displaying ring generalship.

Defense refers to a fighter's success at avoiding blows. This can be accomplished by blocking, bobbing, weaving, good footwork, and/or good movement.

Each of these criteria is supposed to be given equal weight (25%), although there's some dispute as to whether that actually happens.

Additional Ten-Point Calculations
Apart from the four judging criteria mentioned above, there are several ways a boxer can lose points.
The referee can deduct points from a boxer for a foul. In that case each judge must subtract the points from that boxer's score for that round. This means, for example, that if the leading fighter is penalized for a 1 point foul, the resulting score (which would have been 10-9) becomes 9-9. Only the referee determines point deductions for a foul.

If a boxer is knocked down, a point is deducted from the boxer's score. For example, if the leading fighter (who is rewarded with ten points) knocks down the other fighter, the resulting score would be 10-8.

A standing eight count is scored the same as a knockdown, deducting one point from the score of the fighter who took the standing eight count.
Final Match Results
At the end of the fight, points are totaled on each judge's card. If one fighter is ahead on all three judge's cards, he wins by unanimous decision. If the fighter is only ahead on two judge's cards, he wins by split decision. If the fighter is ahead on one judge's scorecard, but the two other scorecards reflect a draw, the fight is called a draw. If the fighter is ahead on two scorecards, but the third scorecard calls it even, then the fighter wins by majority decision. If this sounds a little confusing, the figure below should help sort it out.
Unanimous Decision
Judge 1 115-113
Judge 2 114-113
Judge 3 116-113
Split Decision
Judge 1 115-113
Judge 2 115-113
Judge 3 115-116
Draw
Judge 1 115-113
Judge 2 113-113
Judge 3 113-113
Majority Decision
Judge 1 115-113
Judge 2 115-113
Judge 3 113-113

Hatton Drops Title, $2 Million To Face Castillo

By Mark Vester

As expected, Ricky Hatton informed the IBF in writing that he would vacate his junior welterweight title to move forward with a June 23 bout with Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas.

IBF president Marian Muhammad told the AAP that mandatory challenger Lovemore Ndou would be installed as the IBF champion.

Ndou revealed that a $2 million offer was presented to Hatton for a fight in Australia. According to Ndou's camp, Hatton's team responded with a deal that would have put Ndou on the undercard of Hatton-Castillo for a very low amount of money.

Hatton's promoter Dennis Hobson said that they were open to offers to fight Ndou, but his camp was taking their time with negotiations .

"We could have done business and reached an agreement," Hobson said. "We had all week and I'd already spoken to my broadcast partners about working something out. I had a venue in mind and had spoken to them, too. Being totally honest, a fight with Ndou would have been a hard sell to HBO and the American fight fans but I was prepared to explore the possibility.

"Unfortunately, Ndou's people weren't exactly ringing my phone off the hook trying to make something happen."
