Hatton Drops Title, $2 Million To Face Castillo
By Mark Vester
As expected, Ricky Hatton informed the IBF in writing that he would vacate his junior welterweight title to move forward with a June 23 bout with Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas.
IBF president Marian Muhammad told the AAP that mandatory challenger Lovemore Ndou would be installed as the IBF champion.
Ndou revealed that a $2 million offer was presented to Hatton for a fight in Australia. According to Ndou's camp, Hatton's team responded with a deal that would have put Ndou on the undercard of Hatton-Castillo for a very low amount of money.
Hatton's promoter Dennis Hobson said that they were open to offers to fight Ndou, but his camp was taking their time with negotiations .
"We could have done business and reached an agreement," Hobson said. "We had all week and I'd already spoken to my broadcast partners about working something out. I had a venue in mind and had spoken to them, too. Being totally honest, a fight with Ndou would have been a hard sell to HBO and the American fight fans but I was prepared to explore the possibility.
"Unfortunately, Ndou's people weren't exactly ringing my phone off the hook trying to make something happen."
