Orginal Post: WushuPadawan001: I've got my butterfly's down pretty well and want to got for the spin. Problem is that no one at my school can do (or has ever done) a butterfly-spin. Does anyone have some suggestions as to how I should approach the technique?

I don't think anyone on this site is a stunt performer. Most of us focus on sport or reality applications of the martial arts and would never even attempt a butterfly or spin of any kind. A good number of us probably don't even know what those terms really mean. I know my conception of a butterfly is extremely limited.
So, it may benefit you more to seek other forums with a greater focus on your specific style or approach to the martial arts.>

If it's the same technique I'm thinking of, I had trouble too when I first started to learn it. One of my instructors explained it to me like this:
"Approach it like your running from someone or something and just before you would start to execute the jump, reach down with your hands as if you were hopping over a short fence and swing your legs up and over."
It was a lot easier after that...>

This is for Tease T Tickle. Butterflies and butterfly-spins are traditional Gong Fu techniques. I know this because Jeff Bolt, Joel Rodriguez, and Dr. Yang Jing Ming all endorse and teach butterflies at their schools. So don't be so quick to dismiss "stunt" techniques.
But thanks for the advice anyway, it is appreciated.>

In fact, he is clear to point out that he has limited conception of it. The butterfly technique itself is more of an evasive technique and not one that would be very pratical to use today. Yes, it is primarily a wushu technique and is "acrobatic". But, it is taught by most Kung Fu schools as part of the curriculum in order to teach students about coordination and movement. Not to mention that it's also a part of some empty hand forms. Personally, I would never use it in a fight becuase it's just not practical.>

I don't know if we're talking about the same move, but it sounds cool anyway :)>

Wushu, ask David, he might know. Or, I can get you in touch with a couple of people. Since Joel Rodriguez is my oldest kung fu bro, I can call ask if he has a source and let you know. Joel does teach butterflies but I only know of maybe 2 of his students who do the spin. Butterflies have to be timed just right in order to be effective, otherwise it is not a good street technique.>
Post: WushuPadawan001:
Honestly, I?m not looking for a functional butterfly, just something cool, fun, and challenging that has more to do with hang time than application lol! After all, I don?t think I?ll be flying on the streets.>

From seeing your jumping ability, I do not think flying will be a problem....lol, aww to have young legs again!!!! Now I know young Padawan why Sifu emphasizes rooting the older you get....gravity is hell!!!>
