Orginal Post: MA dude: His name is Sami Berik and he has a 10-5 san shou record I think and won a gold medal in tai chi in a world championship in China. He started out with wing chun and then moved on to tai chi and added some supplemental ground techniques. He has beaten Abdul Mohamed who is a beast wrestler and reguraly competes in fights for Cage Rage. His record is not very stellar in mma. But that is because he is light for his weight class and constantly fights in superfights against much more experience opponents. Here is his website www.samiberik.com and here is an awesome highlight video www.samiberik.com/hunreal.wmv The song is blood brothers by papa roach. Anyone know any other kung fu/sanshou fighters in mma?

Nice find.
Theres a hapkido man entering a MMA competition as well, I'll try to find the link.
I hope more of the so called "TMA" arts that have changed their training methods will begin to enter these matches.

The owner of my friend's Tae Kwon Do dojo is competing in MMA. He's been doing Hapkido for I believe 15 years or so, ( I could be off), and TKD for a little less.
He's won a few and lost one fight as far as I know.>

about the TMA guys doing MMA, that's awesome and I also hope there's more of it, there's two guys in my class that want to do it, but they're not very good, they are both bigger than me but can never get me when we're rolling, but with some more training who knows, there are some guys in mma now that have a tkd or judo background and they do their arts justice, I would love to see some guys do the same for hapkido, the world hapkido association has pro hapkido championships that look like they could easlily be adapted into mma, check out the rules and trailer for the competition dvd- www.pro-hapkido.com>

i dunno...that "tai chi" guy looked like he was using the styles that are already adapted to MMA....maybe it's because i'm not well-versed in tai chi...but i fail to see what he did that was tai chi related....i saw all: boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu. maybe i'm wrong...i watched it hours ago and don't feel like watching it again so yeah>

His elbows were flared a lot and in muay thai and boxing I believe your elbows into your body. If you check out his website he tells about his training and he says utilizing tai chi in mma is about applying the principles not hopping around in a kung fu stance. Jason Delucia also uses some aikido in his mma matches. Here is a hapkido guy http://dankim79.sites.uol.com.br/di...s_bjj_final.wmv fighting mma in korea. Hapkido guy is the blond one.>

Oh yeah.
I am not saying the man isn't any good, but I definately didn't see anything about his movements and fighting that showed any signs of Tai Chi training. I am not talking about techniques; I mean I did not see any of the internal principles inherent in his movement (ie. he had no root, he definately used sectional power, he lost balance multiple times w/ his kicks and punches, i didn't see any sticking to his opponent, he opened himself up w/ his strikes, he bobbed around, etc. etc.).>

I am not an expert of tai chi so I probaly can not give you much of an answer. But he also competes in tai chi competitions and has won those so he obviously knows someting about it. On his site he talks about how tai chi influences his fighting.>
Post: WushuPadawan001:
wuming you are right on. But remember that this guy is in MMA fights not taiji. The principals (and rules for that matter) are very different. But there is one characteristic about this guy that displays his taiji training: he goes right in to his opponent, he finds the opening, goes in, and doesn't stop.>
Post: Blade:
Obviously his training in taichi didnt really help him here :P.>
