Orginal Post: Iron Knuckles: I suppose this is as good a place as any to put this.
I very recently lost my favorite knife... It was a smith and wesson S.W.A.T. ( I think I lost it on the beach somewhere, no chance of recovery  ) I'm in the market for a new folder and I'm seriously considering just getting the exact same knife. But I want to examine my options. I was looking at some Ka-bars that look pretty nifty, but having never owned one I'm still not sure. I want something practical and tactical, with a pricetag under $150. Any suggestions?

I highly recommend something from Kershaw's Ken Onion line. They're assisted opening, have a great handle and blade shape, and, while not cheap, aren't bad enough that you couldn't replace it if you had to actually use it. I prefer the action on them to the SOG assisted openers, but it's really a matter of personal opinion I think.>
Post: Iron Knuckles:
Hmmm... I don't know much about the assisted opening knives. My feelings are the less mechanisms the better. Then again I really don't know anything about them, so I'll look into those.>
Post: Gong||Jau:
They open as well as (better than for the most part) any switchblade I've handled (not that I know anyone who owns a switchblade ), but if you don't like mechanical opening, I'd suggest one of the CRKT blades that flip open with a thumb stud. They're made of quality steel and have good locks, and while I don't own one, everyone that I know that does loves it.>

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping to hear from some people with experience with a particular knife, just because I hate ordering stuff out of catalogs or the internet without actually being able to see the item and handle it. I'm a cynical person by nature...>

I ended up getting a Cold Steel (good call lapu) Mini Tac and am rather happy with it.
http://www.knifepro.com/product.asp?ProdID=100392&CtgID=
It's a fixed blade (4" blade) with a kydex sheath. Easy to conceal and draw... Nice and legal too  . It's about the same size as my old folder (when open obviously) However, since I collect knives and various other weapons, I am always on the lookout for something new and unique, so if anyone has any suggestions feel free to let me know.
Currently I've been carrying it with the handle at a slight upward angle close to the small of my back (the sheath partially tucked into the back of my pants so I can grab it with my right hand), or tucked into my boots (yes, I wear combat boots). Any other suggestions?>

Mini Tac is a good knife, I had Hai Hocho, it have very similar specifications like Mini Tac just diferent tipe of blade. It was exelent knife.>
Post: Muaythaiguy:
Gong, the ken onion line is a great set of knives, but not exactly what you want as far as tactical knives are concerned. The reason I say that is because of the handle on the leek (no guard makes it very easy to slip). In my humble opinion the best production tactical folders are benchmades. I myself carry a cold steel ti-lite with a titanium handle, and I love it. It's hard to say which particular knife is the best. It all depends on what you're looking for and the size/shape of your hand. My advice to anyone looking for a tactical knife is to make the handle and the sheath a priority.>

I got a new toy!!! I just bought a CRKT M-18 folder and am in love with it. It's got smooth action and absolutely no play on the blade when it's open. It's a liner lock, but it's got CRKT's LAWKS system, which pretty much makes it impossible for the lock to fail. It's a Carson design and with the Carson flipper it's pretty much as fast as an automatic knife. This sucker has tactical folder written all over it. Plus it was shaving sharp out of the box. I got it for about $80 and it's a lot of knife for the money.>

CRKT M-18 is cute knife, but its pocket knife. Its exelent to have it with yourself when you have to take off skin from potatos...>
Post: Iron Knuckles:
Grrrr...how dare you setsu! insulting my new favorite toy  It is a pocket knife, but it's quite a large one. In fact, the blade is the same size as the cold steel mini tac I purchased earlier. Unfortunately, I can't carry around any large fixed blades, because they attract a bit too much attention (besides, it'd be a little difficult trying to conceal a 9" bowie). I've also noticed that carrying a fixed blade attracts much more attention than pocket knives, even though most of my folders are larger than many small fixed blades.>

It was just joke, actualy in my opinion CRKT M-18 is exelent pocket knife, and can be very usefull. Its not too long blade, noone will not make you problems becouse you have it, when you have something to cut or something like that it can be realy usefull and what is realy advantage of that caind of knife becouse you can always take it out and it whant shock people around you. If you work something and take out 10" blade knife to cut some rope people will call police or in best case just think that you are lunetic, but if you take out CRKT M-18 everything will be just normal.
I have one knife, not CRKT M-18, but similar to it in my pocket all the time and I dont count it as weapon, its just usefull pocket knife and I needed it milion times.>
Post: Iron Knuckles:
I knew you were just kidding... I do have one question though.....

What's wrong with that?>

There is nothing wrong in that if you take your medicals on time >

Some of the good ones are C.K.R.T., SOG,or, S&W. I prefer SOG Flash II for the simple fact i can get a spring assist ( manual open) with a blade lock so it will not open unless I want to open it, and it is very light and strong. it is also legal to carry unlike switch blades.>

Why get your own knives when you can get someone like this to protect you?>

Lately I have been drawn to Columbia River Knife and Tool (CKRT). I have owned a few of their folding blades and have enjoyed their quality and simplicity, plus their prices are very reasonable. I have been slowly shopping for a fixed blade that can be wore both as a neck-knife and a belt-knife and I am leaning towards theirs (http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=1029). They have a series that is modeled after Japanese style swords that look really nice, though I will probably end up buying the Carson Neck Knife or the Hammond ABC Operators combo edge.
If you are looking at folding blades I would concur with Gong Jau - check into the Kershaw Ken Onion blades. I had one of their assisted opening knives and I loved it. It was fairly expensive for a folding blade ($80), but it was well worth it. I wouldn't worry about the mechanization on these - or most other major brands of folding knives - failing. They are built very well and a major malfunction with the locking mechanism is very highly unlikely. Even wear and tear has not been a problem in my experience, and most of the good knife makers give out lifetime warranties with their blades.
Sypderco is said to be of really high quality, though pricey. I personally don't like how their blades are styled. Benchmade has some great knives, and their Nimravus series fixed blades are beautiful, though they are very expensive as well.>

Iron Knuckles,
As a recreational knife maker, I have to ask, are you still interested in a Fixed blade? If so what's it's purpose in life? You can ask BloodyBirds about the results of my labor.>
