Effective Self-Defense Weapons

Orginal Post: vladimir: What weapons you have carried around that you've found effective in fights? Also what's your opinions on other weapons like pepper spray that people carry around for self-defense?

Post: Parishda:

An M-4, an M-9, a M249, an M240b, a 50-cal., a MK 19......

Seriously my favorite weapon is a folding knife. I carry one every where I go. Slide it into my front pocket with the clip hooked on the pocket front. Personal opinion: the knife should have one finger opening capabilities, I prefer spring assisted. Knives have so many uses and I find this the easy way to carry one.>

Post: JC1007:

More often then not these days I carry a 16" expandable baton. I've found that I don't carry my firearm off duty as much as I used to now that the neighborhood thugs and I have reached and equitable agreement. They'll keep their stupidity and dealing under wraps and not be blatant about it and I won't sneak up behind them and bulldog them to the ground to take them into custody. ;) It's worked for about a year now and there haven't been any issues.

By being a police officer though I can get away with carrying a lot more crap on me then the average citizen. A knife would seem the most practical.>

Post: yoda1:

Being that I?m a tactical instructor for some police departments and am certified in OCAT and ASP I carry these items from time to time. I also have my CCW so I do carry my weapon from time to time. But the best self-defense weapon I have found is your mind, use it right and it will lead the way to safety.>

Post: Iron Knuckles:

I have a folding knife on me at all times. I never really think of it as a weapon, but could very easily be used as one if it were ever needed. I think when I turn 21 I will probably end up getting my ccw and carrying a handgun. Not because I live in a bad neighborhood or intend to get in a lot of confrontations, but because I'm a big believer in being prepared for anything.>

Post: Tease T Tickle:

Pepperspray is both better and worse than people think. It isn't likely that you'll spray and they'll be rolling on the groun in pain, unable to do anything for a number of reasons, so it's probably less effective than typical people think. However, the usefulness of blinding your opponent can not be downplayed and the potency of most peppersprays is such that you don't need to get it right in their eyes, and can even just spray your sleeves and swipe across their face to get the same effect.>

Post: Hengest:

The weapon I've carried the most often has been a knuckle duster (brass knuckles). My favourite weapon by far. I've also carried a kubotan, but, for the most part, just used it as a punching weight anyway. I've rarely carried a knife and once carried collapsible chuks, but that was a complete waste of time: heavy, unwieldy and difficult to conceal.>

Post: samurai6string:

I have a very long, heavy duty lanyard <sp?> with bunch of keys on the end of it. It's legal to carry and can be used like a flail, or to perform Itatsu Ryu type rope techniques. I've never had to use it as a weapon, but i think it would be usefull.>

Post: EscrimaConcepts:

Hi All,

You speak of weapons as if they will be the deciding factor in a fight situation. this is an illusion. Your hands, feet and all tools are weapons, but if you can't move then you limit the damage you can do. If you have a palm stick, knife of a rackable baton, you have to learn the way of using said weapon. Only someone who trains with weapons can first understand them and more inportently deal with an armed attacker.

I train and teach in Escrima Concepts, through these Concepts I can pick up any weapon and use it. Also our unarmed system works through concepts and movement, giveing you greater power and time to destroy your attacker.

I leave you with this,

What is a weapon? :?: :?: :?:>

Post: samurai6string:

Escrima is taught at my dojo as well, I think it is really cool how you can apply the technique to almost anything. I also agree that almost anything can be a weapon if you understand how it functions. Take a rolled up magazine for example, a paper back book, or even a plastic comb or ball point pen.>

Post: Dirty_Irishman:

I look for duel purpose in everything I carry. I'm training in knife fighting so of course I'm carrying at least one at all times. HOWEVER! We have limits here on how long a blade can be so I have to be careful about what I carry. My folder is a $10 Winchester from Wal Mart that's got a rather good edge but is also very heavy and makes a great fist load. A little protrudes from the base of my had which makes hammerfist techniques devestating.

I also carry a Garrity LED light, which is only like $15 and also makes a great fist load and is bright enough to blind most people for a second or two. When used in conjunction with my knife its great. I also carry alot of keys. I put 2 to 3 keys on one ring and then clip another ring on with 2 or 3, then another ring. Most of the rings also have some heavy metal knick knack on them. A quick slap towards the eyes or throwing them toward the eyes is enough time to get to the knife or light. Or to just knee their nose through the back of their skull :D

Tease is right about the pepper spray, you could use it as an advantage, but not as a stand alone weapon. Even most stun guns I wouldn't trust by themselves, I'd have to follow up with a few stomps to the face and groin before turning my back on them to get away.>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

for fist loads, a D size batter does sooweet.>

Post: samurai6string:

Dirty_ in my state we can have a knife with no more than 3 1/2" sharpened edge, what about you? I like those small flashlights as well, and almost anything that will protrude from both ends of your fist, like a yawara.>

[quote=EscrimaConcepts What is a weapon?[/quote
An object that is used to cause harm to another. Like a ball point pen, claw hammer, screwdriver, VX, Vin Diesel's nut sweat, battle axes, midgets with pointy helmets and the Icecapades.>

Post: setsu nin to:

EscrimaConcepts do you have some relative called EU-dude?>

Post: zefff:

I missed that but IMHO a weapon is an idea.>

Post: samurai6string:

[quote=setsu nin to EscrimaConcepts do you have some relative called EU-dude?[/quote  Oh my God dude, I just crapped my pants from laughing!!! 8O >

Post: Dirty_Irishman:

LMAO, between Setsu and Tease I think I just pissed my self.

Samurai, ours is 3 1/2" too. Single edge only. Blah blah blah. Which means if I ever pull the 8" Buck knife I carry in my coat pocket I'm screwed. But so is who ever I pull it on :)>

Post: Dirty_Irishman:

And speaking of D cell batteries...I have a story about one. In high school I had to ride the bus occasionally, and this asshole kept throwing things at a friend of mine. My friend was and to my knowledge still is, only 5' tall and ways 90 lbs. soaking wet and holding a turkey.

I walked to the back of the bus to say something to the guy, but only got about half way when my friend pulled a D cell out of something in his backpack and flung it across the bus at him. It hit the guy right in the forehead, made a nice loud clacking sound that have everyone shut up and turn around to see this guy fall in the aisle holding his head. It was priceless!

So yeah, a D Cell is a good improvised weapon. And so are midgets with pointy helmets.>

Post: samurai6string:

The rednecks on my bus used to hold pennies over the flame from a lighter then toss them at people. I never got hit, and was always amazed to listen to them "huhuhuhuhh OWWW! huhuhuhuh OWWWW!" as they held the pennies in their hands as they heated them.>

Post: Dirty_Irishman:

LOL. I used to take my Zippo and strike it then push the lid about half way down so the flame would heat it up and toss it the assholes. The bad thing is, you can do it to the same dumbasses 2 or 3 times a week.>
