is this true about the YO YO

Orginal Post: BLACK PANTA: There's like a myth or something that the yo yo actually was a weapon b4 a toy. Is this true. I have heard of the yo yo being used AS a weapon, but i'm not sure if that was it's original purpose.

Post: nbotary:

Panta - Dude, of course it was a weapon! Didn't you ever watch "Battle of the Planets" as a kid, you know, "G-Force"!!!

Seriously, I can see it being used along the same lines as a rope dart. It basically works along the same principal - you constantly spin it, throw it out and retrieve it back.>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

not to mention the ninja turtles movie. I've read it was a weapon in the Philipines from the 1500's. But the origin of the yo yo it's self was from 1000ad in China. Didn't say for what tho.>

Post: Gmasterfluffy:

yea i have heard that as well but i think it was alot bigger and made of metal
and cable. how ever no idea if its true>

Post: Sparky-bjj:

There's a james bond movie (I'm not sure wich one), where james bond is attacked by natives with giant yo yo's, the yo yo's basically are giant circular saws attached to a metal wire...offcourse james bond movies aren't exactly the pinnacle of realism...>

Post: MrApollinax:

It was used as a hunting tool and weapon in the phillipenes around the 1500s. Do a google search on yo-yo + phillipenes for more info.>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

yeah I saw that, but that seems to be a much bigger version of today's yo yo. I was really looking for something along the lines of today's yo yo.>

Post: MrApollinax:

The yo-yos of today were designed to be used as toys. I don't think there is any martial application with these yo-yos since they have a very short range and are too light to cause much impact damage. The old filipino yo-yos had a much longer line and were made of stone.>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

yeah and 20 ft of rope. I think the yo yo of today, could be a great weapon. All those trix people know how to do, can be very useful. If the yo yo was heavier, man it could do some serious damage.
From what I gather, the philipinos used it for hunting and guerilla warefare. Their yo yo, doesn't sound like the ones we have today where, it's relatively easy to recoil.....how many times can we say yo yo.>

Great flick. Lots of hot chicks running around in next to nothing... Bond is a pimp!!!

If you notice, it's actually two blades side by side and it was only one guy in the whole film who used it. If I remember correctly, Bond was about to tag Octopussy when the guy's yo-yo dripped water onto Bond's head. I think he got killed when Octopussy's aquarium was broken and the octopus attached itself to his face. To bad it wasn't Octopussy on his face - now THAT would've been the way to go!!! >

Post: Dirty_Irishman:

I had a Duncan yo yo when I was about 12. My then 10 year old nephew got his lip or brow or something busted open when his youndger brother picked up my yo yo and started slinging it like a flail. So it could be used as a weapon. I used it to cold cock one of the kids that was picking on me. Now against a grown man it'd be more of an irritation, but against a school yard bully it's better than mace. Not to mention if you could replace the string with a strong cord or piano wire.

Also in a Punisher comic there was a guy who killed people with a yo yo. But it had saw blades that popped out of it at will and buzzed through everyone.>
