Orginal Post: Iron Knuckles: I'm fascinated by Japanese swords and would really like to learn more about the different parts, forging techniques, and their history as well. Can anyone recommend some informative books or websites on the subject?

Paul Chen's Hanwei line has some of the best katanas money can buy, and the Practical line is comparatively affordable with amazing quality, though the Kami line is argueably the greatest. My personal favorite blade of his is the Tsunami katana. Find some of the swords at: http://www.swordsdirect.com/paul_chen_professional.html>

Post: Ubatama:

I have heard that the quality of Paul Chen's swords isn't that great. Then again I heard that Bugei Trading Co. deals with him from time to time. And I heard that their swords are of decent quality.>

Ah, I do love it when smoeone says Paul Chens Crap blades are some of the best money can buy. I am in china right now, and have visited his forge in Dalian.

First off, the quality control is poor, and more of his swords then not can be bent on your head, and they stay bent. The quality of his swords is internet hype, good PR by Chen, and a market that ias so flooded with crap that any moderately priced sword od ok quality is touted as good quality.

No serious swordsman who is real about the art considers Paul Chen swords anything more then playthings compared to the truly good steel that is out there. They are not worth the little money they cost, and you can get them very cheap over here. Stay away from Chen swords, trust me, there are better smiths out there, with far better quality control, but the Chen Zen BS is a myth, his swords are not so great.>
