Learning nunchaku myself

Orginal Post: dtrip-fightauthority: Hello,

I decided and ordered two nunchakus to a nearby carpenter
(an online shop had them 20 Euros each, gee that was expensive !)

Now, Im 32 yo, have practiced nunchakus before, and know how to
take it slowly. Its just my past-time until I take up TKD again in
September.

Maybe you could help me out, with a few things:

1. The longer the cord is, the smoother and easier it seems to handle
the sticks, is this true ? Bruce Lee had his cord much longer than it
appears in online shop photographs of nunchakus. My old nunchakus
were foam (training), the cord was short and they were pretty fast,
but it had taken me a hell of a long time to learn the basics. The
Bruce Lee movie gave me some ideas. Perhaps I should begin with
long cord, shortening it as my skill increases ?

2. Is there somewhere an online collection of the basic moves ?

3. What do you think can be achieved in a couple months ? Novice,
average, good ? It cant be THAT hard ? You think a DVD will be
necessary ?

Well thats it, thanks

Dimitris

Man, if the internet was about 30 years ago I would swear that post was dug up from an old as fuck archive.

I suggest mahogony nunchucks with nobbly carvings on...they will feel great as you insert them up your rectum you sad act!

what the fuc...aaarrgghhh fuck it! Is this Bushi messing about or what?>

Post: buicken:

for a cord use a bungee, it will increase its length with the force of the swing, and have a nice snapping back action.
It could also be used to secure your luggage on your trip to the hospital with multiple facial fractures.>

Post: nbotary:

Dtrip - Find someone who knows some basic moves and have them show them to you. Any GOOD karate school should offer a weapons class and maybe you could get some instruction there.

My teacher taught me how to use them and then I took it from there. I can spin two at a time, but I don't practice with them as much anymore. When you are learning, you might try wrapping the bottom halves in athletic tape. It will provide a better grip after your hands start to sweat.

As far as the construction goes, mine are octagon shape and have the "speed chain" system - chain link with ball bearings and a swivel. Construction and setup is more just a matter of preference.>

Post: rnc:

best to keep you movements with the sticks simple. forget all of that fancy bruce lee (no disrespect to bl intended) moves with the sticks. i doubt bl would have used the sticks that way in the street. when striking with the sticks, best strike with a downward angle from side to side and move in the direction of the strike, so that when the stick bounces off of the target, it dose not hit you in your head. practice moves with the sticks that will enable you to strike in this fashion. make certain to use your foot work and refrain from positioning yourself head on to your assailant when striking with the sticks. its better to be slightly to the left or right of them. strike with the sticks to the temple or across the nose or across the wind pipe area or the knee. if you hit someone with those things, the person my not go down and may close the distance with you. the sticks are a great close quarter weapon. you can apply choke holds with them, wrist locks and ankle locks. you can catch punches and kicks by wrapping the sticks around your assailants ankle o wrist. if your assailant clinches with you, wrap the sticks around their neck pull down, the same as a thai head lock, only you are using the sticks. hold the sticks parallel in your two hands and position them under your assailants nose and push up or against their windpipe and push back is also good for those who like to close the distance. i suggest practicing with the sticks on a century bob bag with groin. if you are not familiar with the century bob bag, do a google search. good luck>

Post: CraigS159:

First off, forget about Bruce Lee, then, have a cord that feels comfortable (i use chain, as you can use it for blocking blades). No point in using a length that you dont find easy to use. Just practice with different length and stick with the one that feels best.
Second, practivce. I learned to use nunchuka in about 15 mins, up to an advanced level. i was tought by a ninjutsu teacher, i advise that you also get someone to teach you. All you have to do is watch someone preform it in slow, then copy what they do.

1 more thing, don't use foam, they are too thick and you can't preform had switches that easily. Do the moves slow for about 200 times and then when you fell comfortabe in knowing what you are doing, speed it up.>

Post: zefff:

I....cant....stop....myself.....

....craigS159 please STFU! what did you do, plug a matrix style neural connecter lead into your brain and download advanced level nunchuku 101?

Dont reply just do as I demand.>

Post: CraigS159:

Well sorry zefff, but i thought MR.Dimitris could do with some proper advice! - Sorry if i didnt think learning the nunchaku was hard.

and if he happens to have a matrix style neural connecter lead then i suggest using that.>

Post: Gazelle:

I'm no expert with them, infact i am only competent in some basics due to having no teacher, and having nowhere to practise during the windy winter months, but to learn what i know, i did not find it that hard either.>

Post: Gazelle:

By the way, what's wrong with learning with foam? I'm not entirely sure what you mean by hand switches (and don't simply say you mean changing hands! I got that much.) I'm currently using them and finding them fine, a lot less painful if you hit yourself. Though, admittedly it would be nice for something heavier.>

Hand switches, changing hands, same thing.

[quote=Gazelle By the way, what's wrong with learning with foam?
I'm currently using them and finding them fine, a lot less painful if you hit yourself. Though, admittedly it would be nice for something heavier.[/quote

I first used foam while waiting for my acrylic ones to come, its just that using foam ones prevented me from doing wrist spins at a good speed. Nothing really wrong with them.>

Post: zefff:

I told you not to reply yet you waited this long to irritate me?

I suggest you spar with head guard, elbow pads and gloves, (nothing else). Wood nunchuck against nunchuck and against short stick and long stick.

Put your 'blade blocking', 'hand switches' and 15 minutes advanced nunchuck workout to the test. You will find you actually dont know much at all as all that flashy spinning is useless without any footwork and regardless, nunchucks are an inferior weapon as they have a particular, inherent weakness as I understand them.>

Post: CraigS159:

Wow Zefff, you actually came up with some great points there.

Sorry i wated so long its just ive had better things to do with my time. I dont mean to irritate you! Could you please tell me why?

"flashy spinning is useless without any footwork and they are an inferior weapon." I couldn't agree more, nunchuka make a great weapon for showing off, sometimes they can be a good weapon in a fight but personally i would rather use my own hands and feet.>

Post: zefff:

Are you asking me a question there, if so what exactly?>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

concussions are not necessarily the best of teachers..>

Post: zefff:

Are you refering to me mentioning the sparring Panta? If so I did say he should use a head guard of some type. These are ideal IMO because they give full protection but ring like a bell when you are hit.

>

Post: BLACK PANTA:

I wasn't Zeff, I was just illustrating the dangers of learning nunchuks by yourself.>

Post: V-for-Vendetta:

I just bought "Nunchaku - Karate Weapon of Self Defense" and a pair of foam practice chucks. Within about one week I've mastered about a quarter of the book. So not to irritate anyone, but I don't think it's too hard either.>

Post: nbotary:

I can't believe someone re-vived this thread...

What exactly have you "mastered"??? Sorry, but if you learned it from a book, I seriously doubt you've actually mastered anything other than how not to hit yourself.>
