Orginal Post: BLACK PANTA: Man just bought my fist pair of Escrima sticks. I love Escrima man. It's maad fun. Just had my 1st Escrima lesson in JKD class. Any suggestion at to the care of the sticks? I've seen some sticks wrapped with like electrical tape or something. Should I wrap mine?
Info on the sticks. They are rattan wood, black in colour and oh yeah they are sticks. lol
Post: bushidoka:
Don't wrap your sticks!
Apply 3 coats of hard urathane. Sand with 400 grit sand paper between coats. They will come out very deep, claer and sharp, plus they will be VERY, VERY STRONG! If you have the time, put 6-8 coats on. You will be impressed!
If you want asthetics, smoke your sticks with a propane or butane toarch before urethane. Very nice finish!>

Cool Panta, Let us have a pic of the effects of your first knuckle raps too.
I myself would say dont do anything to them, just use em hard and let them deteriorate naturally.
Nothing is more annoying than pracicing or sparring with a weak stick but its good to have an experience of different types of stick (thick, thin, smooth, knobbly, flexible, rigid etc) and also how to adjust your technique once your stick is broken.
The tape is used to prolong the life of the stick by holding the fibres together as they start to fray. Some people use atheletic (tennis racket) tape as a handle but again I would prefer you develop your grip strength and toughen up your palms by using a raw stick. In a pub fight the pool cue wont have any handles on it!
Also I would say try and get into minimum armour sparring as soon as you can once you have the basics sorted. Forget sparring with those heavy jackets even if everyone else is using them, ask your instructor if its okay to find someone who is willing to accelerate their learning with you while putting a few ribs on the line.
let us know how it goes.>

here are some pics of my sticks on my personal album on the site. I took a couple of pics of the sticks alone, however they came out very dark and they can't be seen. My sister took a good few pic of me working with them, so I put those up.>

done and done. lmao
Thanks for the advice Zeffy boy. Will take it into concideration, I'm sure that request will have no problem with my instructor.>
Post: zefff:
Panta, what are those sticks made out of? They look like a hardwood, not rattan. Cant really see as they are quite dark.>
Post: The BadBoy:
Damn, they sticks look like they way a ton. I agree with Zeff, they don't realy look like Rattan. Oh yeah, one last thing. You one ugly Mofo  Love the hair though >
Post: Ninja Kl0wn:
I prefer grey duct tape myself over electrical. Added an extra couple of months to my first few pairs of sticks.>
Post: The BadBoy:
I only ever taped my sticks when they started to splinter, and then only at the bits that were splintering. I was too cheap to buy new ones >

Nice pink roses you have there Panta
I like sticks they looks great!>
Post: 8LimbsScientist:
Was the melodramatic pose necessary? No one was like, "Hey Panta, give us a pic of your escrima sticks, but in a dramatic battle pose, like you are just about to use them to terrible effect.">
Post: bamboo:
What Panta has not mentioned is that "dramatic" pose was in response to the fact that his sifu cat already disarmed him of the boken and he was fearing for his life, that or it was his night for the dishes.
Panta, if those are infact hardwood and not rattan, you can treat them in the same way I told you to take care of the boken.
cheers,

hey hey hey, twas no pose. I hate smiling for the camera, and my sis just took the pics of me while I was just semi practicing. I was thinking of modelling them, but then, my natural good looks will take the attention of the sticks and on me.
the stick are indeed rattan. They are very light, I was surprised how light they were. It's like wielding nothing really. They have allready been treated I found out.
Setsu, the roses accentuate my ears, didn't you notice. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful
I just tooo pretty >
Post: BLACK PANTA:
oh yeah badboy, my boy saw the pic of you on here, and he's like. "yo that guy looks like you" HAAAhahahahaha. ZING.>
Post: lakan_sampu:
after 2 weeks of not surfing the net I'm back! anyway...
are they really rattan?they look like kamagong to me but anyway I'll agree with you...maybe they were painted. Kamagong sticks here in the Philippines are painted black or dark brown so I thought they were. If you say they're already treated then if you're not sure what to do with them to make them more durable then leave them as is. Here are some points that I myself am doing these days in training and freetime with my arnis sticks...:
>when twirling, try not to loosen your grip and hold them in place (at least 2 inches from the butt is a good grip. the butt or "punjo" may be used to strike if the need arises) as to reduce the probability that you'll get blisters at once. Try to get your hands used to the grip. Caluses are merits...
>when doing sinawali drills...don't ram them with your partner's sticks; you'll get tired (usually with the less benefits) and not learn control which is essential to learn its correct mechanics on acquiring speed in striking. Almost all people know how to strike hard so learn controlling it with essential speed. This is also needed to preserve your sticks since rattan is not an inexhaustible source of wood.
>F O O T W O R K. if you're pretty advanced then you can "jog" while doing sinawali with your partner.haha!(yah, we do that)
>practice BASIC striking (and twirling) at least a hundred times daily with both hands, left and right.
o well,, that's all for now. That's all I can think of...
cheers comrades!>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
Li sao, thanks for the tips, yeah caluses are merits, gross groos merits. Havent' gotten much into foot work, we just for now walk around when doing the drills, so I get used to moving while using the sticks. I do hold them 2inches from the bottom, was a tip given from the instructor. You should see him do the partnered drills, he's on his back, on his knees, jogging, always in motion.
As for the wood, I'm pretty sure they are rattan because they dent and not splint. And I think they were painted. It was made in Taiwan. as far as the sticker says.>
Post: The BadBoy:
Ahhhh, I remember the good old Siniwali drills. They were great fun. Murder on the shoulders though. I used to love sumbrada too. Great fun. Don't do them anymore but thats a different story you've all heard a million times, but they were fun.>

Hi,
I have many pairs of sticks. But all of my are very thick rattans, diameter of 1" to 1"1/2 and hickory sticks. These rattans destroy the tiger cane and graphite, and the hickory destroy red oak and other woods. They have a great life for training and would happily send you a pair to try out. I have found none better. Check out Escrima Concepts or Self Secure site as there is a picture of me holding the fat rattans, course prices page..>
Post: buicken:
would anyone like to see a pic of me holding my fat rattan?>
Post: Whitey:
Buicken, you're a funny mothereffer. Panta, If your sticks are really light, they're probably either rattan with the outer skin removed, or possibly even bamboo with the skin removed. If they're bamboo it won't take but a few hits before they're toast. lakan_sampu makes some good points and I agree that you are better off NOT taping or finishing the sticks if you can avoid it. A clear finish looks nice & helps preseve the appearance of a nice burn pattern, but they can really make a mess on the dojo mats once it starts to chip. Besides, there's nothing better than the smell of rattan that heats up during a full power & full speed stick workout. I would recommend though, that you seek out a heavier pair of sticks to work with. Lights sticks are nice, but they'll put you at a disadvantage if in a dire circumstance you are presented with a much heavier type stick than you are used to practicing with.
If you're looking for rattan, look for sticks with their outer skin still on and the closer the nodes (ringed bumps), the better. I also like waxwood sticks because they're fairly strong and have a good medium or middle weight to them. Hickory, oak, cocabola and other hard woods have even better ability to hold up to a good punishing, but with much heavier weights to them.>
Post: zefff:
I dunno if you saw the pics but Panta's sticks looked as hard as any wood I ever saw. Think they were some hardwood of some type.>
