And I actually ended up buying this exact model!
It's beautiful and I'm really pleased with it. When people see it amongst all my ninja training gear, they're always like "What the fuck is that?!". I think it scares them more than my iaito.
Thanks for the post though. The thought is much appreciated!>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Glad to hear you finally got some lubbin', guv
What's the steel on that piece? Is it stainless or high-carbon?>
Post: Hengest:
It's high carbon. I haven't had it sharpened, although I may well do. The blade is great quality, especially for the price.>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
I'm going to be significantly poorer in a short while because I've decided to splurge on two of the pieces here: http://www.kizlyar.ru/eng/shop/catalog/group18.htm?PHPSESSID=8356faf3f3db3590d24a973a51bcd279
I handled several of them at a recent gun & knife expo and I've decided to get the DV-2 and the Phoenix-1 (larger of the Phoenix family). The DV-2 is fantastic field knife that's a blade, an axe and a hammer all at once - chops firewood, splits marrow bones, hammers tent pegs and disembowells Chechens, all with equal facility  The Phoenix-1, on the other hand, is an all-out fighting knife with a nasty spear-point and enough weight to smash bones (or a more fragile blade, even!) with, not to mention pack a deep, nasty stab that I fancy could go through chainmail! Can you believe they issue those things to *cops* in Russia?! Them russkyis don't play around, no sir! 8O
Both of them are milled from hefty slabs of steel in the same fashion as gun components, and the steel is the same as that used to made gun barrels. You could stick one of these knives in a tree and use it to support your full weight. Tough, reliable pieces, both of them I'm contemplating getting a two-sheath harness to wear under my clothes, and maybe an ankle sheath as well. The DV-2 is of course too big for any sort of concealed carry, but my itsy bitsy little folder would make a nice companion to the Phoenix >
Post: Gazelle:
How many do you need?! I can see you now, sitting infront of the TV, and deciding which knife you fancied playing with next. Or, strapping yourself up in the morning. How rough is it around where you are?>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Well, for starters, I just like these knives :D
Carrying something like the Phoenix around without a very good reason is definitely illegal where I love. Wish someone would tell the local thugs who go around packing guns the same thing. As for how dangerous it is, let's just say I've had a gun pulled on me before, had my place broken into while I was in it - at noon - and I see a good number of scraps if I hang around the neighbourhood at the right times of evening. Lately, there've been thugs going about robbing the pubs with guns and knives in hit-and-run raids. So, if I think I'm likely to be out at odd hours which, with night classes going, I tend to be fairly often, I reckon it's a good policy to go around strapped, even if it may put me on the wrong side of the law if I get caught - hence the concealed carry sheaths. As it is, my folder is always with me when I go out.
Oh, and for the record, I don't own a telly >

Those are some cracking knives von Wankenstein. I especially love the blade on the Phoenix-1. Looks like it would go through just about anything!
I too am planning a splurge. Then afterwards I might go buy some stuff (da-dum tsch!). But my splurging target is not anywhere near as practical as your fine choices. I haven't bought a weapon in a while and I've been wanting an early-Germanic-style sword for ages, and this caught my eye: http://www.mwart.com/xq/ASP.product/pid.2043/qx/sword-of-odo.htm
It's based on the German knight's sword from Kingdom of Heaven. Now, I don't usually buy movie collection weapons, but this is such a beautiful blade, I've just got to have it. Plus, the style is actually way earlier than the Crusade era. It's actually modelled on the spatha-type weapons that the Germanic tribes were swinging around a good 800 years earlier, which is the time period that is of most interest to me. It doesn't come with a scabbard unfortunately, but I've seen a couple of places that custom make them for this particular weapon, so I might invest in one of those.>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
You're right about the sword being of a much earlier make, guv. I've been reading Clement's book on medieval swordplay lately and my head is spinning with swords :D Swords of the period depicted in the movie should definitely have been cruciforms with tapered blades. That big fella in the link is definitely a chopper, not a stabber.
I don't remember seeing that weapon in the movie, though - which of the characters wielded it?[/i >
Post: Hengest:
It was the character Odo, the German warrior who died early on in the film in the fight in the forest. He was the big fucka with pigtails who got the crossbow bolt in the neck and carried on scrapping. He was wielding this beauty in one hand and a German-style hand axe in the other.>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Dat's da nutter! I always thought he had the proper barbaric look about him :D Well, maybe that blade was a fitting accessory, then - a christianised barbarian wielding the blade of his father's fathers and all. Feels like a proper saga that way 8)>
Post: Arjun:
It is the sword used by Odo, who was the big Viking mofo in the beginning of the film who got a few few arrows shot into his throat but still managed to fight like a crazy Viking for five minutes before he dies.
I think it is a beautiful blade, my favorite in the whole movie. That film had a lot of really good characters in it.
I myself am going on a bladed spending spree. I am going for the Nimravus series from benchmade, which are beautiful mid-sized combat fixed blades, and a smaller lightweight tactical fixed blade from CRKT. I will probably also get a new folder. I want to go for assisted opening and might buy the same model of Kershaw Ken Onion style that I had before, though benchmade has some nice assisted opening folders as well. Their prices are just really high, and I have learned by now that I lose folding blades at the rate of about one per every 9-12 months so I am wary of spending a lot of dough on a folder. I don't know how or why I lose folding knives so often, so don't ask...
von Wanky: What do you think about the ankle sheaths made by the company you are going through for your custom sheath? Their model might be too bulky for me, but it would be nice to have a backup blade at the ankle area without having to buy a boot-knife and wear combat boots to carry it.>
Post: Arjun:
Hengest got at it before me.
Odo was a proper barbarian. They shouldn't have killed him off so early in the film, I wanted to see some more Viking-style head bashing!>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
I honestly wouldn't know, Arjun, as I haven't actually bought one yet :D That's the main problem shopping online, isn't it!
Yeah, would've been fun to see Odo as one of the combatants in the final siege of Jerusalem. Vikings are always fun :D>
Post: Arjun:
Aye, they are.
I forgot to say that I am also going to buy a couple different sets of throwing knives at different sizes and styles and maybe a throwing axe. I have progressed into my sword/knife obsession to the point where I think it is proper that I start learning how to chuck the things at the trees in my back-yard.>

Well, that's a good enough reason!

I'm looking for a throwing axe too. I'd ideally like a francisca, like the one here: http://www.timelesstailors.com/acatalog/CAS_Battle_Axes.html (scroll to bottom). I'm having trouble finding a company that will ship it to Japan though.>
Post: Arjun:
Oooh, thats nice. I was going to go more Native American style, only because it is more abundant around where I live and I could likely find someone nearby for some basic instruction. But those are nice. It is always good to have a weapon handy that is capable of penetrating chain mail!>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Speaking of axes and the like, I've lately become interested in the knife-and-tomahawk two-hand fighting style made famous by the American pioneers, though I'm sure it was done by other people at other points in history, too. I'm wondering where I could learn how to fight like that short of a Mountain Man fair or a 300AD Viking longhall. Ideas, anyone? :D>

That's interesting you say that Wanky, cos that was part of my rationale for wanting a francisca; I thought that and the seax would make a nice little combo for hand-to-hand, plus the francisca is balanced for throwing in a pinch.
I've been using the seax in kali drills and I'd thought about incorporating the francisca into that. It'd be cool to find info on authentic Saxon seax and axe technique, but I think that would just be a pipe dream  .
I'm not aware of any old texts that deal with the American school of knife and tomahawk, although I know Alliance MA do teach it in their seminars and feature stuff on their website from time to time. Here's an example: http://alliancemartialarts.com/bowietech.html>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Cheers mate! Much appreciated! Very interesting link :D>
Post: Hengest:
Glad to be of service. :D>
Post: Hengest:
Well, I splurged.
Talking with you guys about the sword and stuff just got me wanting it even more, so I ordered the Odo sword plus scabbard last night.
I also found a company that would ship the francisca so I thought what the hell and ordered that. That's what credit cards are for, right?
I'll let you know what they're like when they turn up.>
Post: Wilhelm von Wänkensteïn:
Living as you do in Japan, guv, 'splurge' takes on a whole other meaning entirely
Looking forward to your reviews of your new toys! :D>
