Orginal Post: ShaolinAssassin: Anyone buy swords from ebay? They are extremly cheap. Most of them are about £1 (but p&p is a lot) If someone has bought from ebay id love to know how reliable they are and if you have to go through any testing, I.D Etc, etc.

I don't know what the dollar to pound conversion rate is, but if it's that cheap, I'd be pretty leary of the quality of the product. Anything that you buy on eBay you should research if you can to make sure that it's legit. Otherwise, you just wasted your money. I see people claiming to sell an original Peavey Vandenberg guitar all the time. Turns out that it's not original because Peavey quit making the guitar in the early 90's and just re-issued it as the V-type. I happen to own an original Peavey Vandenberg that I bought from a music store. You can just look at the guitar without having to read the description and tell the difference right away. I'm not saying the V-type is a piece of crap - I'm just saying that you're not getting what you think you're paying for.
I'd be asking a LOT of questions about the swords you're looking at if I were you. Sometimes you can get an owner whose just trying to sell a Japanese Katana that they've had in the family for awhile and they don't know anything about it. You could end up with a real, hand made Katana from the late 1800's that's worth a mint and the owner may never know and they think they screwed you for 50 pounds!>

Yea, there is a lot of supposed WW2 japanese swords on there. They do look old and a little rough around the edges and they sell very, very cheap aswell/ But as i said. The real hole in you wallet it the £60 shipping fee>

If you want an authentic Japanese sword (katana, wakizashi, or whatever) don?t buy it online. Find an antique dealer that sells real Japanese swords. But be warned, an authentic katana is going to cost you.
One more thing, check out The Samurai Sword: A Handbook if you want to develop an eye for Japanese swords. This book has the in and outs of katana design and how to check for quality and authenticity.
One last thing, if you?re serious about your swords and willing to drop a load for one check out Angel Sword (angelsword.com I think). Their work is very good>

Thanks you. Ive always wanted to become a collector. But as most collections go, its going to burn a hole in my pocket.>

Shaolin - as I stated before, just make sure you do the research and find out everything you can before you go and buy something. If you're an informed buyer, the seller won't be able to bullshit or steamroll you into the sale of the item. You'll also be able to tell if they know what the hell they're doing or not. They'll either give up on selling the item to you, or if it's worth it, you can get it for cheaper. I can't tell you how many times I did research on a product I wanted to buy and the seller didn't have a friggin' clue what they were doing. I either made them look/feel like a dumbass and/or I got a better deal because I knew what was going on. Knowledge is a wonderful thing...>

Dont know much about swords but would love to have one for my wall.
One thing I know is that a real katana is really really sharp. I saw a video on internet called 'katana vs gun' where u see a bullet fired at a katana and guess what the bullet was cut in two peices!>

Can you provide a link to that? I'd like to verify the authenticity of it, especially since the odds of firing a gun at an object that thin and hitting it head on are VERY slim...>

there's a vid going around, do a search on gun vs katana....it is quite spectacular, and legit.>

Alright, I found it on compfused.com... They have two videos - a 9mm vs. Katana and a .50 caliber vs. Katana. Needless to say, I was rather impressed...>
Post: zefff:
its not that impressive considering a rounds tip isnt engineered to cut through a steel edge. Im sure we had a thread about this before???
Shaolin, I dont know anything about blades but I know everyone has differing levels of expensive. £60 might be a lot to you and nothing much for the next man but if your collection makes you happy then who cares? I puke at the idea of individuals collecting blades that they wouldnt know how to use but whatever makes youy happy. The reproduction blade serves the same purpose as a bonafide example on your wall.
IMHO a blade of any type should be treated the same as a stick.>

I bought a katana from Ebay for $20. It wasn't too sharp and the blade shook around whenenver I swung it but for the price it was well worth it.>
Post: ShaolinAssassin:
Well thanks guys. But i wont be buying it to shoot the hell out of it with guns :) I just want a few for my wall. So sharpness/handling/ etc doesnt really matter. As long as it looks cool and is in good condition.>

Same with me, it's a rickidy piece of shiyat. Mine had a rat tail tang, and was made in Pakistan.....PAKISTAN. Can't complain either, cuz I copped it for 8 bux. All my friends were like "wow cool, lemme have it" So I was like, hey maybe it isn't so bad. Then my Sifu looked at it, and said it wasn't worth the 8 bux. He was very cruel in his critisism of it >

I bought a Dell printer for a dollar off of eBay....best buy i ever made! of course s & h was 25 bucks, but still! an all-in-one printer...so anyway, the point of this story is sometimes even good stuff is cheap on eBay. just keep that in mind.>

pretty much any sword you buy off of ebay is gonna be of a pretty crappy quality. Obviously it doesn't really matter if it's just gonna be a wall hanger, I would just suggest not trying any cuts or anything. I guess that's pretty much common sense, but you never know.>

Thats a rather absolute statement, and blatantly not true. While much of what is on ebay is crap, if your well educated and know about swords you can find good deal. Remember I said "well" educated. Means you can tell a lot about a sword just from a pic, and I mean a lot. I don't have any problems, but been seriously pursueing swordsmanship for 25 years, so I'm not typical. Do some research, you'll be better perotected frmo the scammers.>
