Using Keys as finger spikes

Orginal Post: : COPIED FROM MSG BOARD

This one has been around seemingly as long as there've been keys that
would fit betwixt your fingers. The idea is to hold your key ring so
that the keys protrud like claws or spikes from between the fingers.
It shows up all the time online and in e-publications such as Martial
Arts Mastery (issue #186 for instance).

Advocates say that it increases damage, reduces chances of injury when
attacking, and makes you appear more "prepared" and less of an "easy
mark."

Detractors complain of "ripped up fingers, time it takes to arrange
the keys into a weapon form, and how the keys stab into the hand,
hurting the palm, when you jab forward with the keys held between the
knuckles."

What's the truth between the two?

Is there a "right way" and a "wrong way" to do it (as suggested by the
MAM article)?

Post: The BadBoy:

I got into a fight playing footy once. I had my locker key at hand so used them. I aint proud of the fact and I'm sorry for the huge gash I've left on the guys forehead. :(

Stopped the fight real quick though :) . Serves the dude right for trying to jump on my head with studs on his boots.>

first to tell that I realy respect mr. Kerwin Benson as martial artist and even more as person. Some of his tips and advices are realy useful and interesting, but there are some things that I dont agree with them.
Now about keys. In my opinion keys, as weapon, and similar things can be realy useful in some advanced level, but for beginers they can be realy dengerous. Problem is becouse moust people read about it, but they dont know how to use it. I know that it sounds funny but its truth, they dont know how to use it. Their first reacion is to take keys out becouse they read about it molion times before, but when they have keys in their hands they dont know what to do. Than in moust cases they start with some streaking techniques with keys in their hands. Now just think what would happen if someone in bar fight stab you in stomac with key? Would you run away? Well maybe, but there is much more chance that you will become angry and seriously injured him. Thats bigest problem. In my opinion if you are ready to take someones life or realy seriously injured someone than you may use keys and attack his eyes, neck... but than you have to take responsibility infront of law and whats much harder yourself if you are not able to do that keep your keys in pocket.
But, keys can be useful if attacker attack you with grappling technique and you may stab his arm for example to force him to release you. Ofcourse again you have to be ready to injured your opponent.>

Also I forgor one more thing...

Moust dengerous techniques with keys in my opinion are when you use them in way that you throw them in opponents face. If your opponent know anything about martial arts or fight you wont get nothing with these technique. If you are realy lucki you will just loose your keys, if you are not lucky you will mad your opponent.>

I wouldn't really trust the "key theory" myself. I mean, it could be implimented as an effective use, but for the time it takes to get the keys, fix them between your fingers, and not hurting yourself in the process, you could have already hit him, or at least protected yourself from getting hit. Even if you do manage to slip the keys between the fingers, there's also the issue of the grip and strength it takes to keep them in place, and making sure your hands dont get too sweaty, lest the keys fall out. Now, as a sneak attack, it may work :P But as far as the effectiveness, I have some doubts.>

Post: bushidoka:

Is it really an advantage to have the keys? Remember, you lose the use of your hand for an inferior weapon. What are they going to do that your hands are not? If you just want to gash the guys forehead, why can't you do that with a knife hand circular strike?
Give up the keys. You will do better with your hands as weapons, they are more versitile, faster, stronger and more flexible.
My gp used to say that keys were made for honest people, cause a man of the world will just destroy the lock.
Just an opinion.>

Post: Tease T Tickle:

I'd be more likely to use a pen than a key. But that's just me.>

Post: Hengest:

I'd go with Des. I'd probably use a pen if I had one to hand over keys.>

Post: Ninja Kl0wn:

Sure keys aren't really much of an option in many situations, but what about going to/from your car? Alot of people who get jumped are caught on the way to thier car in a parking lot.

Theoretically, your keys should already be in hand. I don't know about you guys, but I usually dig my keys out before I head to the car instead of when I'm standing beside it. Get all that useless junk off your keychain and you should have no problem comfortably wrapping a fist around your keys. Instead of holding your car key with your thumb and index, hold it in your fist sticking out between the index and middle. Car keys usually have a nice rubber top so they won't dig into your hand when you hit someone, and it leaves you with a nice piercing item to punch soft targets with.

That's how I normally carry my keys anyway. It's not like it would be a huge lifestyle change for someone to hold thier keys in thier hand and move the car key over by one finger.>

And what is an inch and a half of steel going to do for you?
playing the devils advocate here, but what the hell eh?>

Post: ShaolinAssassin:

I wouldnt use keys in a fight. Unless it was in a life and death situation. But it is so easy to break your fingers.>

Post: lakan_sampu:

I'd go with des too. I always have a pen inside my pocket to use like a dulo-y-dulo or for thrusting just in case someone pulls of nasty things on me...>

Movie reference: The Bourne Identity - Pretty good fight scene using a pen.>

Post: setsu nin to:

widouth any doubt I would use pen instead keys. Also you may buy pen with knife hidden in it.>

Not only would it be painful if it puntured your skin but if you hit a major artery........their dead.>

Post: setsu nin to:

dscott is right, you may kill man with key. I still wouldnt use it, but yes it can kill a man or injured him.>
