Origin of the McDojo

Orginal Post: BLACK PANTA: I was wondering if anyone has a hypothesis about the origin of the McDojo. I personally think it all started when the Karate/Kung Fu craze of the sixties came about. Everyone was either a Master, Grand Master or Ninja. And the majority of the population was eating this stuff up. With all the kung fu movies, and Bruce Lee stuff. People were ignorant and gullible. I think people saw that they could exploit this foreign "trend" from the orient and make some bux. I was wondering this after, I pondered why there were so many McDojos around. Then I realized most of the owners of the McDojos were martial artists of the 60's and 70's. If this is the case then like the baby boomber they will be retireing soon. Hopefull the McDojo will go the way of the dodo. I want to think so, however there will be their sucessors to carry on the tainted legacy of these establishments.
What do you all think the origin of the McDojo is. And if anyone actually knows what the origin is. I would like to read it. Please if you do provide proof that what you say is indeed the origin.

Thats interesting thread Panta!
In my opinion everything started with Karate and Judo. Some martial artists practiced Boxing or Judo and after that they started with Karate and after some time they opened their schools where they mixed Boxing and Judo techniques or Judo and Karate or... For that time it was exelent, becouse many of them were realy good martial artists, but some wrong people see opportunity to get lot of money in that too so they whent somewhere where they couldnt finde any martial arts school and opened there their school. Soon they get martial arts videotapes and become "experts in anything you whant". If you track them for longet time you may noticed how many of them started with Karate and Judo and opened some Karate school, than they mixed some TKD techniques in it and still had Karate school. That Ninjutsu become popular so they just changed name on the school and it become Ninjutsu school, after that when Aikido become popilar they changed name in Aikido and today they have Jujutsu or Jiu Jitsu schools. Now bigest problem is, in my opinion, becouse Through all that transformation werent changed much, he just take few videos and changed name of the school.
That were people who learned combative Karate for competitions, other who leatned from Karate just forms or prefered forms they started Kung Fu schools.>

I reckon crappy martial arts instruction has been around for as long as crappy martial artists, at least, if not longer. How do you think the crappy ones got that way in the first place?
Just a tad more seriously, you'll probably find anecdotes of bad martial arts instructors and their students in accounts from just about every culture that has a strong martial tradition. Just the accounts from China and Japan alone would probably an entire library. Unscrupulous marketing is human nature, and if there exists an easy way for one to make a comfortable living, most people would jump at it, even if it were at the expense of others. Of course, pre-modern McDojos tended to have a shorter lifespan since they tended to get shut down by the circumstances of the times in which they existed, ie. lawlessness coupled with regular and often mortal violence and serious martial artists who didn't take kindly to frauds >

Everytime we see a McDojo, we should all barge in there wearing Gi's. And then when everyone pauses to look at us, the largest one among us will jump up and kick their sign down.
It'll be just like the kung fu movies.>

I'm more in favour of signing up for classes pretending I know jack shite about fighting.

Post: Stg:
i suspect it started during the bruce lee craze by people who only knew of karate and assumed he did karate, carried itself on by moronic ma people saying bruce knew karate in order to promote their arts and themselves, and blew up into a crisis when the karate kid/jean claude van damme became famous, which is when the mainsteam public, in thier ignorant minds, confirmed that it was indeed karate all along that wasa being used in ma movies and such and decided that everything in ma is either karate or derived from karate. i was watching a video clip of a sayoc kali demonstration and some dude came up to it trying to talk to me like if he knew all about kali:
"oh,i see he is trying to throw his opponent off balance....a techique from karate!">

Stalin says it started with capitalism.
Clearly, this must be true as there is no other motivation to run a McDojo than to make money off of false promises and your clients' ignorance.
I'm with Stalin on this one.>

I personally think it started with Mas Oyama- there was a craze around his accomplishments, and a rising misconception that all Orientals practiced the martial arts. This concept grew and grew as the feats of 'Godhand,' 'The Golden Dragon,' and others became popular. Martial arts like 'Jeet Kune Do' were degraded to the point where they meant little more than cross-training. Ninjitsu was reduced to looking sneaky by people who hadn't the slightest clue. Wrestling teachers learned a few new joint locks and advertised themselves as Jiujitsu coaches. And all along, until recently, few had the common sense to openly expound the truth.>
Post: setsu nin to:
Wow, you think that Mas Oyama started with McDojo?
Well its hard to finde someone from McDojo who will pass Kumite 100, plus Kyokushin Karate have some exelent techniques, its much safe for practicing and it developed helth and strong body...>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
I dont think he meant Oyama started the McDojo. I believe he meant the idea of Oyama and his accomplishments made people start the McDojo.>

See you know what the sad thing is? I saw Bloodsport when I was like 14 or so...and I thought it was the coolest movie ever. Now if I had known at the time that it was "based" on a real guy, and if that guy had a dojo near me, I would have joined in a minute.
And then now, 8 years later, I would be a totally brainwashed loyal blackbelt in Frank Dux's American Ninjutsu. Its a shame because most of them will never get into a fight so they spend their entire lives believing they are deadly ninja masters.>

I dont remember shure any more, but wasnt Dux fighter with some impresive records ???
Maybe it was some other guy...>

He claimed to have many, but it turned out that all of them (I think) were faked. I posted a link to a site discussing it a while ago, but the thread has probably been pruned by now. If anyone is interested I'll dig it up again.>

Im going to have to agree with the 8 limb scientist on that.. and thats practically where i stand. believe i know how sad it is .. so anyway ive gotten out of the Mcdojo land into MMA after being basically kicked out cuz i just wanted to make money and not rip people off.. Also just because its a mcdojo doesnt mean that every instructor there will be a push over it just means what they teach is crap and how they teach... and who they teach and their business moves are shady.. ie 2 year constracts for 125$ a month etc. "ATA = mcdojo, kemp = Mcdojo.. the list go on farther and farther like they said wrestlers even now .>
