Orginal Post: WushuPadawan001: Have any of you heard of Pau Kua (sp?). ThereÂ’s a Pau Kua school near my university that reeks of McDojo. IÂ’m thinking IÂ’ll stop by just for kicks, but IÂ’m interested to know if this is a legitimate style.

Post: bamboo:

I have a close friend that practices pau qua , or baguazhan. Its a beautiful chinese boxing system based on taoist philosophy. Although I don't practice the art, I do understand the principles in terms of philosophy, its just really interesting stuff that helped me understand breathing and how it relates to powerful movement.

Trained for health and as a martial art depending on the intentions of the practitioner. One of the great "internal" styles of China and often compared to aikdo in terms of technical form.

Thanks for the info Bamboo.
I did not realize that Pa Kua and Baguazhang is the same thing. This is unfortunate because I am very interested in learning Baguazhang. Oh well, maybe IÂ’ll get lucky and the school will be legit but with a McDojo business model (they teach Japanese and Chinese styles....so probably not :( ).

Also, I found this while looking up Pa Kua.

Wushu - I can't believe you actually asked that question. I don't mean that as a slam, I'm just surprised that you asked it. :?

You know who you need to ask about whether the school/teacher is legit...>

Post: WushuPadawan001:

Yeah, I must admit I felt the fool when I realized Baguazhang and Pa Kua is the same. Oh well, live and learn.>

Post: Hengest:

Yeah, just a difference in transliteration. Under Wade-Giles it's pa kua, under Pinyin, bagua.>
