Orginal Post: zefff: How did you prepare for your first bout? How long did you have to train for it? Did you focus on holes in your game or on what you do best? Did you have knowledge on your opponent and work a gameplan to that? Did it go to plan? Did you have a specific fitness program? Did you have to lose or cut weight or did you have to develop strength? How did you deal with preparation mentally? How did you react mentally to your win or loss?
Please explain! I was offered a semi-pro contest last night but injury has put that out of the question. But I imagine it musnt be long now until I am offered another but I know my game has a lot of holes, hence a lot of questions! :)

What really worries me is the idea of fucking nazis having a man to rally behind in the sport of mma. In my opinion something like this could really damage the image of the sport and fuel the arguement of mma being nothing but brutal violence. A little hatred makes for bad headlines.
Or am I over reacting?

Orginal Post: bamboo: FEDOR COMMITS TO M-1
PRIDE Heavyweight Champion To Headline First Show Under New Ownership
By Loretta Hunt (

PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko has committed exclusively to the new ownership of M-1 Mix-Fight Championship, which has been purchased outright by an undisclosed American entertainment-related company, according to a source close to the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Established in 1997, the St. Petersburg-based M-1 held over 30 events under the ownership of Russian businessman Vadim Finkelstein, also the long-time manager of the much-sought-after Emelianenko. Finkelstein is also the proprietor of the Red Devil Sports Club, a facility and team that houses numerous Russian fighters, including PRIDE veteran Roman Zentsov and former UFC middleweight Andrei Semenov.
The source confirmed the new ownership has infused a substantial amount of capital into the organization. Finkelstein and others will stay on to assist in running the company, which will continue to promote under a variation of the M-1 name. The new M-1 will take more of a global stance, and Emelianenko (26-1) will headline its inaugural event as early as January or February, possibly in the U.S., the source said.
On March 27, Ultimate Fighting Championship majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta bought the assets of PRIDE, only to discover Emelianenko had previously signed a non-exclusive, non-transferable contract with its former owners, Dream Stage Entertainment.
As late as September, UFC president Dana White had insisted a deal with Emelianenko was imminent, though repeated negotiations between Finkelstein, colleague Apy Echteld and the Las Vegas outlet could not produce an agreement to bring the Stary Oskol resident to the famed Octagon. A major point of contention was White’s insistence Emelianenko sign an exclusive contract with the American promotion, which would exclude Emelianenko’s participation in Sambo competitions. Emelianenko is a three-time World Combat Sambo champion and ambassador for the sport in his homeland.
Undefeated in 24 fights (including one no contest), Emelianenko is widely received as the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter. The 31-year-old former Army firefighter rose to the top of PRIDE’s ranks by besting standouts like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (22-6-2). Emelianenko submitted 2000 Olympic Greco-Roman silver medallist Matt Lindland (20-5) at Bodog Fight “Clash of the Nations” on April 14 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has not competed since.
A formal announcement of the purchase, as well as plans for the new organization’s first event, is expected by the end of this month.

Orginal Post: zefff: I wasnt going to mention this but after watching the fight again I really cannot see how Griffin won the fight. He did a lot of good work and a draw would have been fair IMO but how did he win outright?
Tavares had a ridiculously huge amount of submission attempts and how many times did he get his back?..lets not forget the huge knee! The judge who gave 30-27 needs a kicking!
Tavares was the one looking to finish constantly, which was what allowed Griffin chances to escape - all Griffin did was control when he got position. I thought you got points for actively seeking submissions over the guy escaping them???
Seems to me Griffin and his camp has sway with the organisation or nowadays you catch a judges eye by stalling groundwork rather than trying to show genius abilities in it.
The fight was still awesome though! Best technical fight Ive seen in ages.

COUTURE BREAKS ARM
Even Superman feels it from time to time.
Following yet another feather-in-his-cap performance Saturday at UFC 74 in Las Vegas, real life superhero Randy Couture (16-8), was informed Sunday by doctors that he’d broken his arm during his third round TKO stoppage of Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2).
Couture, 44, sustained the injury Saturday blocking a Gonzaga right high kick with his left forearm, cleanly separating the ulna bone with a “nightstick fracture,” a break common in law enforcement circles. The injury placed the UFC heavyweight champion’s arm in a splint for six weeks. The appendage will not need a cast.
“It’s not displaced, so the doctors think it will reattach in about a week and a half,” said Couture, who embarks on a South African adventure to shoot a leading role in major motion picture “The Scorpion King – The Akkadian” in nearly six weeks. It is believed the injury will not effect Couture’s shooting schedule.
To watch Couture's reaction of his bout and for a re-cap of all the fights, check out The Fight Network's original series "After The Bell" in the homepage's video player.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: Jeff Hamlin of MMAMadness.com is reporting late breaking news that Erik Owings and Jamal Patterson of the New York Dragons have been ruled out of tomorrow’s IFL semifinal matchup vs. the Tokyo Sabers due to injury.
Both Patterson and Owings were injured while training with former Pride fighter Daniel Gracie, according to the report. The team is already without Fabio Leopoldo.
CFFC veteran Dan Miller had already been tapped to replace Leopoldo while Deividas Taurosevicius will fill-in for Owings. Tim Boetsch will step up for Patterson.
Taurosevicius will fight Savant Young in a battle of lightweights while Boetsch is set to do battle vs. Valdimir Matyushenko in a light heavyweight clash.
Boetsch is the Extreme Challenge Northeast Light Heavyweight champion, a title that he just won this past Saturday in West Orange, New Jersey against Team Rhino fighter Brendan Barrett.
I saw the fight and while Boetsch looked good, he’s going to have his hands full with Matyushenko. He deserves a lot of credit for stepping up and taking the fight just four days after his last fight. The New Jersey control board is usually very strict so I’m surprised they are allowing the match to happen. Boetsch didn’t appear to take too much damage from Barrett so perhaps there’s no legitimate reason to stop him from competing.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: GracieFighter.com is reporting that a match has been made between welterweights Jake Shields and former UFC fighter and current B.J. Penn training partner Renato “Charuto” Verrisimo for EliteXC’s next card on September 15 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The card will be telecast on Showtime.
It’s a fight that Shields is looking forward to:
[INDENT “He’s a tough guy and I’ve been looking forward to fighting him for some time now. We were supposed to fight each other about a year ago so I’m happy it’s now finally going to happen.”
[/INDENT To read the GracieFighter.com report on Jake Shields vs. Charuto, [URL="http://graciefighter.com/?page=news&PHPSESSID=d44e894fc58ace013d335d9f49a28cb1" click here[/URL .
Verrisimo’s Jiu-Jitsu is world class and Shields is one of the best wrestlers in MMA at 170 lbs. The latter statement is really saying something considering there are so many good wrestlers who compete at welterweight.
If you like knock out, drag out standup slugfests, then Shields vs. Charuto may not be for you. But if you have a true appreciation for ground fighting, this match has a lot to offer.
Here’s what the rumored card on Sept. 15 is shaping up like (note: none of these matches are official):
- Murilo “Ninja” Rua vs. Robbie Lawler for the EliteXC middleweight title
- Gina Carano vs. Shayna Baszler
- Jake Shields vs. Renato “Charuto” Verissimo
- Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett vs. Victor “Joe Boxer” Venezuela (very tentative)
- Nick Diaz vs. TBA
Also, EliteXC is planning another edition of ShoXC in August. Showtime indicated after the first card that they intended to hold all future ShoXC’s on Saturday as opposed to Friday.
August 25 had been talked about for the second ShoXC but a small promotion you might of heard of called the UFC is planning on holding a match between two guys named Randy Couture and Gabriel Gonzaga (never heard of either) for the heavyweight title. I think it’s very likely that ShoXC will be held on August 24.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: When Dana White speaks, it’s news.
Just back from a vacation to Tahiti, White recently conducted an interview with ESPN.com. While he didn’t break any huge news, White was very outspoken against steroid use in MMA.
While he’s never condone usage and has always spoken out against it, this is the first time I know of where White has promised punitive action by the UFC in addition to any penalties a fighter might be subjected to from the commission.
Here’s an example of one exchange:
[INDENT ESPN The Magazine: What changes do you plan to make?
White: Moving forward, I am putting the b—- slap on guys who get caught using steroids from here on out. The fighters make a lot of money. I have all these nickel-and-dimers starting up leagues, and they don’t steal fighters from me. There are a lot of morons out there throwing money around, and nobody’s leaving me. When what you’re selling is human beings competing against each other, there are always going to be issues, man. Personal problems. Contract issues. There are always problems.
ESPN The Magazine: But what is the punishment? What are you going to do?
White: They’re not going to get paid. I take care of all of my guys. If you fight your ass off for me, you’ll get paid. But what I’m going to do is: I’m going to wait and see if they pass their drug tests. If they don’t, you’re going to get paid what’s in your contract and that’s it.
[/INDENT White was also asked about what will happen to the lightweight title if Sean Sherk’s one-year suspension is upheld following an appeal that’s set for the next few days:
[INDENT ESPN The Magazine: What are you going to do with the 155-pound weight class?
White: I don’t know. Like I said, I trust when Sean Sherk tells me something, and I believe him. I’m not just saying this because I’m president of this league. He’s my friend, and if he tells me he didn’t do this, I believe him. He’s innocent until proven guilty. He’s not a liar, he’s not a cheater. We’ll see what happens. If at the end of the day the commission says he took steroids, then that’s what the ruling is and he’ll get whatever they put on him. That division will live on. This is a speed bump, and it hurts us bad. But we’re going to move on.

In regard to an earlier report about a match in San Francisco between Frank Trigg and Jake Shields in October, it looks like Shannon Ritch may have spoke too soon. Apparently, Shields has signed a bout agreement and Trigg has not, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: Fighter and promoter Shannon Ritch is claiming through his official account on the Underground forum at MMA.tv that a match between Frank Trigg and Jake Shields has been signed for a card on October 19 to be held in San Francisco, Calif. at the Cow Palace.
Both Trigg and Shields have had a mini-war of words via the Internet. Shields made recent comments during a video interview for ProElite.com and I believe Trigg addressed what Shields said on his show, Tagg Radio.
According to Ritch, the match will be the main event of a card to be shown on PPV.
Ritch is also claiming that Ruben “Warpath” Villareal, Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, Jake Hattan, Bryan Pardoe, Zane Frazier, Gabe Rivas, and Leland Chapman (son of Dwayne “The Dog” Chapman) are scheduled for the card.
Trigg vs. Shields is a very interesting matchup of two former college wrestlers. I’m surprised this match is happening for Ritch and not EliteXC. Also, Ritch had been trying via the Underground to get in contact with Kimbo Slice to have him booked for the card. There’s been no update in regard to the status of whether Ritch was able to get in touch with Slice’s people.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: I was a guest on Fight Network Radio with Mauro Ranallo today. Mauro and I discussed a number of topics and Mauro revealed that K.J. Noons has been discussed as a possible opponent for Nick Diaz on EliteXC’s next card slated for September 15 in Honolulu.
I want to stress that Mauro didn’t say the match was signed, only that Noons is receiving consideration for the bout. He did mention that the bout would be contested at 160 lbs., if signed.
The potential matchup makes only a little bit of sense to me. Noons is a strong prospect who was finally able to show off his boxing skills to a mainstream MMA audience this past Friday vs. Edson Berto. The performance was impressive, but Noons simply isn’t ready for Diaz. Not by a long shot.
On the other hand, I understand the potential logic. Diaz won’t be fighting for Zuffa so right now he’s contracted only to EliteXC. Coming off what had been a win this past February against Takanori Gomi (the decision was overturned after Diaz tested positive for marijuana), Diaz has a chance to be one of EliteXC’s signature stars. They need to have him start fighting again as soon as he’s eligible.
With the way their roster is aligned now, the only other candidates to face Diaz are Victor Valenzuela, Edson Berto, and Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett. Berto is coming off a loss and Bennett is rumored to be finally rematching Valenzuela on the 9/15 card. Unless EliteXC brings in a fighter off roster, Noons is really the only choice.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: I’ll be a guest on Fight Network Radio with Mauro Ranallo in a short while at 3 p.m. ET. You can listen to the show on Sirius Channel 186 or listen online at HardcoreSportsRadio.com.
Also, I wanted to apologize for the lack of updates today. Right now there really isn’t much going on. It actually worked out well because I resumed training today after a two-month layoff and it wasn’t pretty. I had to make not one, but two trips to the bathroom. To make matters worse, I am starting at a different school (MFS Philly still rocks, but it’s a long commute for me and my schedule keeps changing… the school I go to now is well-regarded as well and is an affiliate school, so everything is all good) so I looked like a total bitch on my first day. I’m sure you all wanted to know that.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: Jeremy Stephens and Josh Neer are just two fighters of note to win matches on small shows held in Iowa this weekend.
Stephens, fighting outside of his UFC contract, defeated Nick Walker on Saturday night at Midwest Cage Championships 9 in Urbandale, Iowa.
A day earlier in Iowa, former UFC fighter Josh Neer made his debut at 155 lbs. and was victorious against former UFC and Pride fighter Paul Rodriguez in Des Moines at GreenSparks Fighting Championship 5.
Neer won via TKO at 1:38 in the first round while Stephens also recorded a TKO at 4:45 of round one.

Orginal Post: Martial-Arts-Blogs: Former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman is interested in a possible second tour of duty in the UFC.
In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, Coleman expresses his desire to continue fighting and to also do so for the UFC:
[INDENT With an 4-4 record in his past eight bouts, including two losses to Fedor, Coleman hasn’t maintained the influence of the early days of his career, but he hasn’t hung up the gloves yet. In fact, he still has two fights left on his current Pride contract and with the buyout of that organization by Zuffa, it sounds as if Coleman sees a possible return to his old stomping grounds in the near future.
“I’ve always wanted to get back in that cage and I always knew I’d get back in there at least one more time. That’s were I got started. I like the cage and I like the UFC rules better anyways,” said Coleman, obviously in reference to the brutal forearms and elbows he was so famous for. “I can be more effective in the cage than I was in the ring.”
[/INDENT At 42, I just don’t see the UFC having much interest in Coleman. No one can deny his place in MMA history, but look at how the UFC dealt with Ken Shamrock’s request to make another comeback.
I know he still wants to fight, but Coleman would be a great fit as a coach for the IFL if they had interest in adding an Ohio franchise.
There’s also this little nugget of info that I found particularly funny:
[INDENT Interestingly, Coleman is also the subject of a new movie that is readying for production. Entitled “The Smashing Machine,” the same as the movie about his friend Mark Kerr, it sounds as if Jean-Claude Van Damme could be portraying the former UFC and Pride champion… an “interesting” choice that Coleman even seems to find odd.
[/INDENT What’s next, Steven Seagal as Chuck Liddell?
