Dispelling some myths...

Orginal Post: 8LimbsScientist: I just wanted to start this thread to dispel a prevalent myth about Thai boxing, but I figured I'd keep the title ambiguous in case anyone thinks up any other myths they'd like to bust.

The first myth is about conditioning your shins. You will hear from tons of so-called experts about how you can kick trees, smack your shins with hammers and sticks, and roll bottles up and down your shins. All of these techniques are not only incorrect, but dangerous. The only way to condition your shins safely is to kick a heavybag without shin pads and to spar with shin pads. Overtime they will become conditioned, but it won't happen overnight, nor should it. There are no shortcuts that are also healthy.

Also, there is this image of training in Thailand where all the Thai fighters kick trees. Well, a long time ago Thais used to kick Banana Trees, which are pliant and aren't as hard as the average trees we have here. Now, of course, if you visit a MT camp in Thailand you will see heavy bags, and Thais kicking them. You won't see any Thais kicking Oak trees or swinging baseball bats at their shins.

I came across [URL="http://www.reuters.com/article/televisionNews/idUSN0825312020070708" this[/URL  the other day; it appears that the Contender Muay Thai is being filmed in Singapore. I think the other fighters in this [URL="http://www.mymuaythai.com/archives/alfonso-gomez-hosting-the-contender-thailand/" promo clip[/URL  are probably still in. The only fighter that I know who has come out and confirmed he’s participating is [URL="http://www.mymuaythai.com/john-wayne-parr/" John Wayne Parr[/URL .
The press release states that they are in negotiations to have it aired in the US. I’ve got my fingers crossed, any Muay Thai coming into my home that isn’t a re-run of K1 on ESPN is welcome. In all seriousness this would be huge, for Muay Thai in the States.
Like we discussed in our previous [URL="http://www.mymuaythai.com/archives/why-isnt-muay-thai-more-popular-in-the-states/" post[/URL , this might be the big push Muay Thai needs to get a foot hold on American soil.

It seems a lot longer then that. I guess quite a bit has happened since his passing. I wasn’t particularly close to him nor did I agree with the way he handled some things. That said, some of my fondest memories of San Francisco, some of my closest friends I’ve met have all revolved around Muay Thai. I have Alex to thank for all of these things.

I don’t know much about Schneidmiller, I did to do more research on him. I’m not really digging his fighting style though. He’s quick and snappy, in an almost manic way. I don’t know if it’s their size difference but he’s letting Sato get off way too many leg kicks.
