Orginal Post: zefff: I laugh inside every time someone says, this and that style is the most effective. Usually people who involve themselves in such talk in this day and age (in my circles anyway), are always banging on about 'this style' of striking and 'that style' of grappling. It is like people forget the reason why our ancestors picked up sticks and stones in the first place!

What Im getting at is weaponry.

Are modern era MAists detatched from reality or is unarmed combat the biggest threat in civilised society? Maybe we need a new descriptive, instead of martial artist, martial athelete. Maybe it is me who is stuck in the past and maybe the atheletes can clearly define that their skill is just for sport???

For me weapons are the biggest leveller but I see a lot of martial atheletes and even TMAists who dont really see the significance of weapons training. I wonder if it is our relatively safe and policed society that has created a lack of regard?

I've never met the guy so I certainly cannot judge his skill, so for arguements sake lets assume that he's really good and of good moral character. Why would someone have to go into all the crazy 10th dan soke stuff in this day and age?

Is this actually good for business?

But no one won't stand up to him, i live with my mother but when he comes he acts like his in charge. I've been thinking about just attacking by hitting him in the throat or heel-kicking him in the knee. Is this advisable at all, i am aware i could get me seriously injured including him, but im sick of it. Any suggestion would be welcome. I'm 108 pounds (i have a fast metabolism) and he's about my height but like 200 pounds.

Orginal Post: zefff: I know there was an old topic on this subject but I couldnt find it. Sorry.

Yesterday I was attacked by an Alsation and a staff. Here are some picks for those who dont know:

I was jogging back from the local shop down a back alley with a loaf of bread and a carton of milk when I was ambushed by the Alsation then flanked b y the Staff.

The Alsation literally saw me from 50yards then as I gave body language that said I didnt want troublr but I will be com ing through - it charged full pelt and flew straight in for a bite without even bothering to bark. I didnt have time to pick up rocks so the only thing I could put between me and its teeth was the milk. The staff came out of nowhere onto my side and so he got the bread. I was feckin shittin it as I fended them off bullfighter style!

The bread and milk probably lasted 10 secs between them then I had to fly ninja style over the nearest 7 foot fence! They took a nibble at my trainers as I jumped...I was now trapped! Only now did I stop to think of how these animals had taken the piss and comprimised my dominance and that I was top of the food chain!!! PAYBACK!!! Amazingly I found a pile of timber and after selecting the stoutest piece which I still didnt have faith in, I saw a heavy shovel!

I popped up cursing and roaring, waving the shovel ready to behead the little feckers, jumped over ready to kill and then a bloke who was a neighbour of the dogs appeared and called them home into their yard.

I am going to break their little ribs next time I see them! Went home and told the missus. She hasnt stop laughing yet!

Lessons I learnt that spring to mind:

1) Animals are no different to people. Because I let them have the inniative, hoping they didnt really want a fight - when I saw he really did, it was too late. Next time an animal runs at me when Im trapped, I will run at it myself to ruin its morale.

2) Bullfighting tricks work! I waved the bread and milk and noticed the dogs attention shift as the eye contact went from me to the things I waved at them. But because I was in a defensive mode of combat I couldnt get back into the game and use the openings.

3) When your running from dogs and you jump a fence that isnt too high, dont go for the safe option of gettin your grip ontop then hoisting yourself up... better to get both hands and one foot up, getting your body horizontal. Or run up it like a monkey...Saves your toes getting caught.

It was a funny encounter cos I learnt so much from those dogs. Highlighted a few areas that need work. But Im still gonna beat those little feckers and let them know I did it to them!. :x

Orginal Post: Gazelle: Hi all, I'm really starting to get sick of this now, i have injured my right side, more specifically around the ribs...because of how i did it, i doubt i've broken anything, but, i wouldn't be surprised if i did some ligament damage, or something of the sort. I know these heal badly, but i was wondering if i could do anything to encourage it...if anyone knew of any tricks? Even better, if anyone knew of any miracles, or had any magic wounds hiding back there?

I did it mid-july, and because i felt bad letting people down, i managed to aggrevate it a lot over the course of a single day (well, that and because i happened to have to tack up the largest horse on the yard, and he wasn't being all that cooperative as far as tightening the girth was concerned), and a few times over the past few months thanks to packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking, packing and unpacking, and quite possibly another one after that. I have done nothing of what you could call 'real' excersize since, and man has it created some bizarre, and somewhat frustrating (given i can't do anything about it) energetic outbursts.

I will be so grateful to anyone who could give me some help on this.

By the bye, i've seen the doctor (all be it reluctantly), and after some encouragement he's referred me to the physio...when i will actually get an appointment, i really don't know, but he said to start doing 'stuff' now to start getting it moving, i just don't know how much 'stuff' to do...knowing me i'll end up doing too much and making it worse.

What makes a good teacher?
Original Poster: wuming
Forum: Others
Posted On: 07-10-2006, 11:56

Orginal Post: wuming: I noticed in another thread someone people brought up the topic of a good teacher, and I thought it would make in interesting discussion here. If this topic has already been posted somewhere else feel free to delete it.

Anyways, I was wondering what everyone thinks qualifies a good teacher. As an opener, in some other thread I noticed some people claiming that a good teacher is judged by his students, or more specifically, his senior student. Personally I don't find this to be an entirely adequate definition. What if some teachers just started their school and the senior student has not come along way yet? What if some other more senior students left the school due to some other extraneous reasons (not related to quality of teaching) and the next senior sudent isn't entirely skilled? Typically seniority seems to primarily signify experience and not always skill level. It his highly probable that someone could practice under one teacher for ten years and not be entirely skilled because of his own lack of effort or natural ability. This is what I find to be the real problem by defining a good teacher by his students alone. The teacher could be an excellent transmitter of ideas, but the students still might not be incredibly skilled because of their lack of effort or natural ability. Take for example the common college classroom. There are always a wide range of scores within an entire class. Some kids will score 90's, some 70's and yet some 50's. This could be due to any number of factors, and when it comes to college, there are always those kids that never show up to class and fail regardless of the teacher. Anyways, my point is that there should be another way to define a quality teacher; that definition, I do not want to shoot at right now anyway. I want to meditate on this idea a bit longer to come up with a more reasonable definition. I hope you all have some interesting insights and arguments for this question whether or not anyone agrees. Good night.

Orginal Post: Tatsukage: I was wondering, are there any real "practical throws"? Throws that you could actually use in an altercation. I realize that one might be abe to pull off a sacrifice throw, but that would mean both people end up on the ground. Surely, out of all the throws out there, there's at least a couple that actually work without getting into too much of a bind or on the ground? I tried modifying gedanate and ushiroate from my aikido training, and they seem to kind of work, but surely there's something better?

Setting up a throw

Orginal Post: bamboo: I thought with Bushi and TTT's new excellent threads, I would write a little something from my forte.

Setting Up A Throw

A throw in the martial arts sense should be at its highest levels almost effortless in that its simply guiding the body or rather ukeÂ’s center of balance in a new direction thanks to the initial off balancing. If you are lifting or powering through a throw using brute strength, you have missed the entire setup.

The person being thrown (known here after as uke) must first be forced into an unstable position or have his or her balance taken. I think it would be helpful to define a stable position as it applies to the opponent.
UkeÂ’s center of gravity (center from here on out) is located approximately two inches below the navel. The center drops downward between the two feet. Uke maintains balance by keeping the feet and body aligned in such a way that this downward spiral from the navel goes to the ground below.
Movements (kazushi) from pushing and pulling to strikes are used to disturb or “take” the center and to move it outside the area of support, thus making the opponent unstable. The nonstriking off balancing movements are generally achieved through an “alignment change” on the uke’s body. This change of alignment is not the actual force (please don’t confuse the “action” with the “result”) but is a measure of efficacy of the movement used to displace body’s center thus allowing for the ease and type of throw to be executed.

“Taking the center”

Strikes, footwork, misdirection and body alignment all play a part in setting up a proper throw.

1. Striking- A hard fist to the short ribs instantly brings uke’s elbow down and in as well as pushes one shoulder down and one up. A strong uppercut often produces a back step and raised hands to the face. Quick straight jabs bring up the hands and often result in a “boxing” like stance (I’ve seen many an untrained person adopt this “stance”). Each strike, making contact or not will result in a certain behaviour and or physical reaction. A well trained and practiced martial artist should able (with a little quite observation) be able to effectively recognize patterns of movement that result from strikes and then move accordingly to exploit them.

2. Footwork- Footwork is of course essential to any throw. You must remain totally balanced if your going to throw. To setup an effective throw its essential to always be in the superior position. How you get there depends on the throwing art you study. One basic principle is to always be in the space not occupied by uke, in other words, donÂ’t meet force head on. By always being slightly off ukeÂ’s so called line of attack (where the momentum is at its most powerful) we can easily dominate ukeÂ’s center of gravity by both being underneath (as in a fulcrum, hip throw) or over top (like a wave, armdrag).

3. Misdirection and Body Movement- Often we will face people focussed on our hands, feet, etc. “Give” them the appendage. Someone looking to grab the shoulders or neck to engage in close quarter grappling has a direct target, moving first from your hips leaves that target in uke’s line of attack for longer thus creating the misdirection as your body will move powerfully as whole all the while maintaining balance leaving the target behind and eventually placing you in the dominant position. All body movement should begin from the hips and always off the line of momentum as well as changing level so as to make physical contact.

The Throw- Too many try to force a particular technique when all that needed is subtle movement in the direction that ukeÂ’s body is already going. If your center is below ukes, then many a variation of the hip, shoulder throws or leg sweeps are the clear options while if the center is above ukes, then a controlling technique into a throw is usually the choice.
Let the throw happen, we learn different techniques to “fit the situation”, not “force the situation“. Do not force a throw, it will more times than not fail.

Why do martial arts?

Why do martial arts?
Original Poster: Gazelle
Forum: Others
Posted On: 10-07-2006, 12:43

Orginal Post: Gazelle: A martial art is defined by one online dictionary as...

'Any of several Asian arts of combat or self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, usually practiced as sport. Often used in the plural.'

I think martial arts has grown beyond that definition. Yes, it is still very much based around that area, but have not certain techniques been developed for their 'wow factor'? It seems to me that there is also a more creative side to it (maybe that's why it has the 'art' in the name? Though, i think that might have more to do with skill.), and a more spiritual side to it also. The reason i have always wanted to do martial arts is not for the self-defense, that's just a bonus, its to see what i can get my body to do, to see if i could move with that incredible prowess that you see some martial artists do, and to see how far i can get my 'mind over matter'/lack of confidence in certain things. It's not just about the effectiveness of the techniques in a real life 'battle' for me, it's about a battle within myself...overcoming some of my own weaknesses, doing things that you might not otherwise do (that's why i like the more gymnastic part of it), concuring the mind's limits, pushing my boundaries. It's a more personal thing than just wanting to know how to handle myself, or just learning things to help me survive in certain instances. I'm not saying it is wrong just to do a martial art to keep fit, or for self-defense at all, i just think martial arts can be about and worth a lot more than that.

What do you think?

Why do you do martial arts?

Orginal Post: Robert_RedBeard: I have been a fan of Krav Maga techniques and training methods for some time now. I haven't had a chance to train with a Krav Maga instructor locally though. I just don't have the $600 to pay for the training.

I have gotten my hands on all the Krav Maga Instructions Videos from Darrel Levin his wife and another chief instructor(I can't remember his name).

I have also added two Krav Maga books to my library. I like what I have read and seen. I have read and reread the books and watched the videos over and over.

What I have observed in classes that I have set in on and what I have learned on my own, Krav Maga just makes sense to me.

But I would like to get others input on a few areas. The Punches elbows and kicks are things that I have been doing for 15 years. So there was nothing new there.

My interest is in the 360 degree defense utilized in Krav Maga.

Are there any Kravists on the board and do you have anything to say about experience with the 360 degree defense?
