Orginal Post: zefff: Has anyone had any tastes of it? I know Voodue was studying in the art but I havent seen him around for a while.
I have a training partner who does a bit and he can never keep still, he is always coming out with crazy stuff in our WC class. Anyway he's finally infected me with the Capoeira bug and I want to go check it out, money and time permitting. I think I could pick up a lot quite quickly as Im not in too bad a physical condition, however I am interested to see if I could effectively merge the style with my WC and Eskrima boxing.
Does Capoeira have martial application and is it blendable with upright arts?
Cheers,
zefff

Interestingly enough, Voodue used to do Wing Chun before he started Capoeira, so for him they must have been (I would think) at least somewhat compatible, and he was starting to practice Shuai Chiao as well, which means he thought it was compatible with close-quarters CMA. Personally I don't know how well they mix, but you should really PM him.>

I haven't been doing it long enough to tell you whether or not it will blend well with your other martial arts.
I can tell you though, that if nothing else it's fun. Time and money permitting, I would take it just for recreation at least.>

It blends well with certain arts more than others. For example, Tai Chi, Aikido, and certain kinds of Karate work well.>

Speaking of Capoeira, does anyone know of any good schools or training groups in and around the Salt Lake City area? My girlfriend is interested in the art and I thought it would be a good way to get her involved in submission later on (through getting into the whole Brasilero groove) and thence into Systema (of which there is a complete dearth in Utah).>

Well hello everybody!
I don't have computer access at work anymore so it?s hard for me to post.
I have actually started taking BJJ instead of Shuai Chiao or Judo. The only real reason is because it's free. I have been teaching capoeira to a BJJ fighter and he lets me train with the class he teaches. The guy is a pretty famous fighter so I feel lucky.
Anyway your question about capoeira being effective is a question I get all the time. It depends on the training really. If you teacher trains you to become a fighter then you will use capoeira for combat.
The problem is your "game" will be affected also. A capoeira player needs to be able to switch from playing a beautiful playful game to a serious deadly one in a heartbeat. If you just train for combat then you will never achieve this balance.
After training and teaching capoeira I see the beauty and effectiveness of the art. All MA have the strengths and weaknesses. I say it never hurts to learn all you can.
As far as combing capoeira with other arts there really is no need. Capoeira is a complete art. I just want to expand my mind by taking these other arts but do see the potential for combing them. I think judo is a perfect art to combine with capoeira.
We have a lot of takedowns in capoeira and judo would help refine those movements. I left wing chun because I found capoeira more fun. My wing chun teacher is well known and the school was awesome. We have some really good practitioners.
Anyway I say go try it out and see for yourself. Try talking to the teacher and ask him about combat. Just make sure you do it with respect. Mestre's are touchy when you question there knowledge.
Let them know you are genuinely interested and have no knowledge about the combat of capoeira. They will probably demonstrate on you the effectiveness! hahahah>

thanks a lot Voodue mate. I wasnt questioning any effectiveness, just if it can be effectively combined.
Anyway Ive put it hold for a while as I am still really into throws and breakfalls. Judo is awesome! I cant believe I actually buzz off getting better at breakfalls.
thanks again.>
