Orginal Post: zefff: I know there was an old topic on this subject but I couldnt find it. Sorry.

Yesterday I was attacked by an Alsation and a staff. Here are some picks for those who dont know:

I was jogging back from the local shop down a back alley with a loaf of bread and a carton of milk when I was ambushed by the Alsation then flanked b y the Staff.

The Alsation literally saw me from 50yards then as I gave body language that said I didnt want troublr but I will be com ing through - it charged full pelt and flew straight in for a bite without even bothering to bark. I didnt have time to pick up rocks so the only thing I could put between me and its teeth was the milk. The staff came out of nowhere onto my side and so he got the bread. I was feckin shittin it as I fended them off bullfighter style!

The bread and milk probably lasted 10 secs between them then I had to fly ninja style over the nearest 7 foot fence! They took a nibble at my trainers as I jumped...I was now trapped! Only now did I stop to think of how these animals had taken the piss and comprimised my dominance and that I was top of the food chain!!! PAYBACK!!! Amazingly I found a pile of timber and after selecting the stoutest piece which I still didnt have faith in, I saw a heavy shovel!

I popped up cursing and roaring, waving the shovel ready to behead the little feckers, jumped over ready to kill and then a bloke who was a neighbour of the dogs appeared and called them home into their yard.

I am going to break their little ribs next time I see them! Went home and told the missus. She hasnt stop laughing yet!

Lessons I learnt that spring to mind:

1) Animals are no different to people. Because I let them have the inniative, hoping they didnt really want a fight - when I saw he really did, it was too late. Next time an animal runs at me when Im trapped, I will run at it myself to ruin its morale.

2) Bullfighting tricks work! I waved the bread and milk and noticed the dogs attention shift as the eye contact went from me to the things I waved at them. But because I was in a defensive mode of combat I couldnt get back into the game and use the openings.

3) When your running from dogs and you jump a fence that isnt too high, dont go for the safe option of gettin your grip ontop then hoisting yourself up... better to get both hands and one foot up, getting your body horizontal. Or run up it like a monkey...Saves your toes getting caught.

It was a funny encounter cos I learnt so much from those dogs. Highlighted a few areas that need work. But Im still gonna beat those little feckers and let them know I did it to them!. :x

Post: nEo-Wolf:

Hahahaha unbelievable, Guess they were hungry. I used to have a staffy, there the best dogs and are usually hungry alot and are quite good at finding and accuring some...>

Post: lakan_sampu:

hahah! too bad, you lost the loaf and milk....u were lucky you weren't injured though. Usually, dogs here in the philippines don't bother me when I look at them and so people say I am kinda weird or something...communicating with animals, not only canines.anyway, that was tough luck in your part IMO.>

Post: 8LimbsScientist:

If the Staffy is anything like the Pitbull or the Amstaff, then you have to be especially careful. They are bred for a trait called "gameness" which means they dont give up, regardless of pain.>

Post: zefff:

I think I might have given the wrong impression...The dogs wanted ME!..not the food. I used the bread and milk to defend myself. It must have been the funniest thing to anyone watching.

The staff was the weaker willed of the two but I still wouldnt want to upset one. When they bite, they dont let go. The Alsation was definetly the dominant one and he was the one who wasnt afraid of wading in.

Anyway Im still gonna walk up and down that lane and when I next see em....>

If you're that hard-up for revenge, mate, try brining some pepper spray the next time you go. A good squirt of that up a dog's nose will do wonders to swing the field in your favour

On a related note, alcohol, table salt and iodine (or iodised salt if you can get it) makes a great mace substitute.>

Post: bamboo:

Revenge is a human attribute, I'm sure the ones you need to speak with are the owners.>

[quote=bamboo Revenge is a human attribute, I'm sure the ones you need to speak with are the owners.[/quote

I second this. It's not the dogs you have to deal with. It's the owners. Do they have a leash law where you live?>

Post: zefff:

 revenge? I suppose u r right, but Im not going out of my way to get them. Im just not going to change my habits. I have warned the neighbors who have young kids though.

...revenge? thats a good point. I'll go away and think about it. Thanks Bamboo.

You see I want to go and spank them because I feel I have been compromised. I want to teach them that they should fear people, especially me and understand that their actions have consequence. But I see now that its not for their good why I want to do this - its for my own ego. Its pretty simple really but I have not trained for this kind of attack and so was totally unprepared...Mentally. Boy, this is an eye opener! I have so much fear within me. I will have to meditate on this stuff. Thanks again.

Man these dogs dont know the favours they have done for me! I will prolly be hugging and stroking them next time.>

Post: The BadBoy:

Fuck fightin a Staffy. Your nuts.>

Post: kranker66:

-...We'll if they live in your neighborhood, let the owners know, and next time let the little buggars have it!...I'm not a fan of dogs persay, if a dog is acting bad and has bad tendencies they need to be dealt with...
- Bad dogs come from bad owners. And the people most at threat are never the owner's of these animals, but the public. Best of Luck.>

Post: MadSalmon:

If you need to kill a dog in self defense there is an easy trick given to me by a dog trainer for movies. You just have to take something with a sharp point and stick it in an eye. The brain is directly behind the eyes. It is an instant kill.

A less lethal way to control a dog is to try to grab it by the trachea and squeeze it. at your risk...>

Post: zefff:

Im sure that stuff works great in the movies!

I dont carry knives but even if I did I know I wouldnt have time to unsheath it to stab a dog through the eye...And besides, I wouldnt want to get my clothes soiled with eye juice and brain jelly!>

Post: bamboo:

Those pesky "jaws" that make it so difficult.>

Post: MadSalmon:

As said in the class I had when I was patrolling on bike, you only need a pen or a short stick. the skull walls of a dog is thin behind the eyes.
you don't need to apply very much force.
If i had the choice of having my throat ripped by a pitbull by doing nothing or trying it, I would try it.

Pepper spray is a better choice. if you have time. You can predict how a dog behave by looking at his ears, tail, eyes and mouth. The barking or growling do not give much info. The dog make sounds to give more effect on other signs>

Post: zefff:

yes okay I'll bear that in mind :)

(TBH I just cant be arsed to argue with you), but one thing that sprung to mind is how does a dogs brain function and what segments does it comprise of?...you know, like how our frontal lobes arent that important to our basic function?...I just wonder if piercing the front of a canine brain will actually cause instant death?

This is besides the main point of not having a pen or stick to hand - I certainly didnt have anything the day I was attacked anyway.

Also, the tracia technique - dogs have driven instrincts and also seem to have a faster response in their nervous system. If I attempt to grasp the throat I have to get past the jaws as Bamboo implied. But lets say I am already bitten, Im sure me cutting off air would cause the dog to shake itself free so it becomes a war of my throat grasp technique versus his bite and tear technique...I think I might lose that war, especially when you consider dogs have a thick muscular neck that is aligned with the jaw and trunk of the body to work as one machine.

I wonder if there are any blood chokes? :)

peace, sorry for dis-agreeing!>

Post: MadSalmon:

There is no problem about being skeptical. Don't worry I don't take it the bad way. There is alot of people in life who says anything to look interesting.

I was bringing the info that I have learned in class two years ago.
Personnally I have never tried those techniques. I was patrolling unarmed during those times and I have never met an aggressive dog on the job. Now, as a police officer I carry a sidearm. This solve the problem for me.

I think the pen or stick is effective because a dog does not have a very massive brain. you can reach the center of it easily.

yes, my friend, it's a difficult war if you are unarmed. With is naturals weapons, human start second. Dogs are naturally killing machines. They have a natural hunting sequence that is shortened by domestication. 1-finding target 2-attacking 3-killing 4-shredding 5-eating.

Wolves have them all by not dogs. Each dogs lack one or more step in the sequence. That's why some dogs are totally non-violent, they miss the second step. that same dog can shred toys to shreds because they have the fourth step. Some dogs are killing machine because they have all the steps except the last one that is eating. Those dogs often kill and leave their prey behind.

another thing I am thinking about is hitting the dog nose, logically, it's one of the most sensitive part of the dog. But if the dog is afraid at start I think it would send it through defensive reflexes and open a full blown fight.
Another important thing, like bears never turn back on them. Don't try to run away except if you're confident about outrunning him. It will trigger the hunting instict and you will become a prey for him. One mistake commonly made by people is looking directly in the eyes of a dog. It is provocative for them.

Unfortunatly, the instructor of the class never showed us how to use the trachea technique. He was telling us that he was on a trip for wolves observation for a movie and that was the only thing that you could do barehanded. With some dogs there is no problem doing it but with others, like my dog, they have a lot of skin and fur around the neck. It took me 2 minutes to find is trachea in all his fur and skin. On leaner and short haired dog it's easier to find

I hope this info was useful>
