Orginal Post: bamboo: I thought a thread dispelling or proving (whatever the case may be) the various myths of martial arts could be a good thing. We could both post questions concerning what we've been told or just some general crap that gets passed around. If you don't have the answer, i'm sure someone else does.
For starts:
1- If you punch a guy hard enough in the nose, it will drive a bone into his brain and kill him.
Umm no nose bone, never going to happen.
2-If you hit a floater rib and break it, this will cause the entire rib cage to collapse.
Its called a floating rib for a reason, besides, ribs are independantly connected to the spine. Mines' been broken twice, painful as hell but I'm still here.
3-Dim Mak- Do i really need to go any further with this?

Expanding on #3: "Pressure points" are for grappling (standing or on the ground), not for poking people, and if you don't know how to grapple without them they're not going to save you.>

4 - I can burninate people with my massive store of chi energy. I can also fly, stop bullets and grow really cool anime hair because I have tons of energy in my body.
You do have tons of energy in your body, but 99% of it is totally unusable and that 1% that is usable is only going to get the mundane things done. Things like running, digesting hamburgers and crying when you realize you can't really fly or stop bullets.>

That's no myth dude!
#11 - Asian martial arts are far superior to Western martial arts since WMA aren't as complex or detailed.
#12 - All kung fu (or worse, all martial arts!) come from Shaolin.
#13 - Taekwondo (or tang soo do, or hwarangdo, or hapkido or just about any other Korean martial art) is 2,000 years old and was practiced by the mighty hwarang warriors.
#14 - The hwarang were mighty warriors.>

How many Takeda's are there out there? I don't think its fair to use this as an advertisement for your martial arts school and then tell housewives that they'll be able to emulate the abilities of martial arts legends taking two classes a week before picking up the groceries.
Royce Gracie defeated all comers in the first two UFCs using nothing but BJJ, but I'd be willing to bet that MOST BJJers even today wouldn't last very long against the competition back then.
It's kind of like saying, "Take Kyokushin...our art will allow you to defeat raging bulls barehanded by chopping off their horns.">

Yip Man........ (well not a woman, but he was rather thin) also Yin Fu (aka "Thin Yin") Most internal arts incorporate this principle.>

How many? Well my point was just Sokaku Takeda, but when you ask there was more Takedas who were fameous and defited many real experts in martial arts. On the list with Takedas I could put Ueshiba who defeted many real experts from many different martial arts in same or similar way...
I dont know why you pointed Royce Gracie here. His fights had rules, which were moustly on his side, UFC is sport and only sport and not real fight. His fights dont proove anything, in my opinion. He defeated with his BJJ Sumo fighter who didnt train for few years. If Sumo fighter dont practice just for one year he wont ever be able to get back is same shape any more. Why Royce didnt go in fight with Asashoryu? Or that Kung Fu "expert" as they pointed (there was video here), who didnt show any knowledge, he didnt show even dasic martial arts knowledge... But for example Sokaku Takeda didnt have problems with taking life in many of his fights (not all fights ofcourse). We are talking here about sport and real life, these are two totaly diferent things. I dont say that Royce Gracie should take lives to proof that BJJ is good, I just say that Sokaku and Royce are two totaly diferent worlds.
"I don't think its fair to use this as an advertisement for your martial arts school and then tell housewives that they'll be able to emulate the abilities of martial arts legends taking two classes a week before picking up the groceries. "
I 100% agree with that. Its classical example of McDojo. In m opinion two classes per week are great if you need something just as some activity. But there is no difference is these two classes are martial arts, tennis, rinning, football or something like that. But if that houswife get good physical and mental shape and practice martial arts for at least one hour five days per week (in my opinion seven days, but lets say five) than after ten years we may talk about here as martial artist.>
Post: 8LimbsScientist:
The reason I posted about Royce Gracie is because he was able to do something that I would say the majority of people who study his art even today (10 years later) could not emulate. For instance, I know a couple BJJ blackbelts, and I just seriously doubt they would have won that tournament if they were transported back in time.
My problem with the quote that I posted is that I think its misleading because it tells people that they'll be able to do that just by studying the art. Like a boxing coach telling me that if I start coming to his gym, I'll be knocking people out just like Mike Tyson did.>

I agree to that, there are milion of McDojos and you could wrote books and books about all craps that they offer.>

I know. Between moving, having a baby, finishing my degree, and starting a new job, I haven't had much time for the forums (or for training. I'm so out of shape right now). That stuff that people say about both parents putting on weight when "they" are pregnant: absolutely true.
It's going to get worse in the spring when I start in on my MBA. I don't know if I am going to have time to do much of anything except work, school, and baby time. It's going to be rough.>
Post: 8LimbsScientist:
#28. I get this one a lot. "Oh so you're still doing that karate stuff? Wow, so at this point you could kick anyones ass right? Like if someone were to attack you on the street you'd KO them without even thinking about it due to your training? Ok, ok, ok...so...if I did this to you, what would you do?"
That last one is the worst. I hate having some old friend swatting at me waiting for me to demonstrate some crazy martial arts defense in the middle of a crowded restaurant.>

Straying slightly from MA myths but -
