Why do martial arts?

Orginal Post: Gazelle: A martial art is defined by one online dictionary as...
'Any of several Asian arts of combat or self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, usually practiced as sport. Often used in the plural.'
I think martial arts has grown beyond that definition. Yes, it is still very much based around that area, but have not certain techniques been developed for their 'wow factor'? It seems to me that there is also a more creative side to it (maybe that's why it has the 'art' in the name? Though, i think that might have more to do with skill.), and a more spiritual side to it also. The reason i have always wanted to do martial arts is not for the self-defense, that's just a bonus, its to see what i can get my body to do, to see if i could move with that incredible prowess that you see some martial artists do, and to see how far i can get my 'mind over matter'/lack of confidence in certain things. It's not just about the effectiveness of the techniques in a real life 'battle' for me, it's about a battle within myself...overcoming some of my own weaknesses, doing things that you might not otherwise do (that's why i like the more gymnastic part of it), concuring the mind's limits, pushing my boundaries. It's a more personal thing than just wanting to know how to handle myself, or just learning things to help me survive in certain instances. I'm not saying it is wrong just to do a martial art to keep fit, or for self-defense at all, i just think martial arts can be about and worth a lot more than that.
What do you think?
Why do you do martial arts?
Post: zefff:
To keep me off drink and drugs. I am a lazy person with an addictive streak so being addicted to training fills my time and keeps me away from more destructive addictions.
Martial arts = a fun hobby which makes me feel good about myself.>
Post: Sparky-bjj:
I practice martial arts (bjj and submission grappling) simply because I love fighting and being on the mat! There's no deeper, spiritual meaning or goal I want to achieve.>
Post: Robert_RedBeard:
I practice and research because I think the world is going to hell in a hand basket and I will very possibly need these skills in the future if I wish to survive.
I want my son and my daughter to be safe and secure.
I don't do any of this for fun. Though I do not deny that I find it fun and exciting. I do it because I like having the tools to do the jobs I will need to do.
I wish to bring martial traditions back to my family, as well as my people and pass that knowledge on to the future generations.>
Post: angryrocker4:
I do it to make myself a better 'warrior'. Being in danger of being called to active duty at any time, I prep for the worst to be able to act when needed. I've been fighting something all my life, whether something physical, mental, theological, or political. I've found that the pursuit of perfection as related in MA enhances all aspects of your life. I train with the full knowledge that I'm going to use these abilities eventually, not "maybe" but WILL, and have already on a few occasions. I seek to test and prove myself in everything I do, MA included.
All my training, military, state, etc has only been enhanced by MA.>

According to that particular definition, i guess not!
What is it with people and the French???? If there is one thing that gets me (well, one of the any), it's stereotyping! Sorry, i feel in a somewhat expressive mood!>
Post: angryrocker4:
I love stereotypes! They are great! People expect one thing, then you give them something else and BAM! Down comes the axe!>
Post: angryrocker4:
As far as the french goes, I believe it started as sport among high class people. Besides, anything french is bad, wine, french fries, people, etc. JKing>
Post: nbotary:
Sorry Gazelle, but I've yet to meet a Frenchman who didn't act like a pompous, arrogant ass to everyone they came in contact with. Everyone I've ever met from France looked down their nose at everyone else as if they weren't shit. The funny thing is - if it weren't for the Americans and the Allied Forces, the French would all be speaking German right now!!!
VIVA LA FRENCH!!!
Assholes...>
Post: Gazelle:
Well, i suppose at least you have drawn it from some experience with them. I still hold, that you shouldn't make a judgement on them all just because of the majority though...or even, the minority that you have met.
Angryrocker4, is not the food considered good there? If i was not, why would we have french restaurants in different countries? Or, people going to Paris simply to dine there, or even famous French chefs (they seem to pop up in person and as well as just being named in cooking shows more than i have seen other nationality chefs, minus UK, of course, being as they are UK shows)? And i am positive that you will find other things that are good too about them/their country!>

This one may or may not do anything for my arguement, but these kind of things can be a bit of fun. I would have read it, however i have to shoot.

Nope, food sucks, only stupid people like it.>
Post: Gazelle:
Man, you can be asking for trouble there! I've never tasted it, so i can't pass judgement, i will however ask, how the heck is that latter comment justified? If you have a good reason then fine, but...If i like something you don't, how does that make me stupid? Or are you refering to the people being stupid because they like something that is French? Many people like to learn the language, either for communication purposes, or just for the sake of it, does that make them 'stupid'?>

Considering that Americas greatest culinary achievement is Burger King, you shouldn't be criticizing French food.>

[quote=JH Considering that Americas greatest culinary achievement is Burger King, you shouldn't be criticizing French food.[/quote Considering French food is overpriced, you don't get enough of it and it still tastes like shit, we'll criticize all we want!!!    At least when I go to Burger King I get the satisfaction of getting a burger, made my way, it fills me up and I don't have to break into my savings account paying for it!!!
"Oh, I'd like to order some crepes please."
What the fuck is a "crepe" supposed to be?!?!?! You can't drink a beer with a "crepe"!!! Give me a prime rib smothered with mushrooms, with a loaded baked potato, broccoli and corn on the cob any day of the week!!!   >
Post: bamboo:
Sadly, when I think of America, I think of "supersized" fries and excess when it comes to the "cuisine".
Having passed many in day in France when I lived overseas, all I can say is that I enjoyed the food, the people and culture greatly.

Gaz,
You know the sayin ignorance is bliss? It's true cause the less you know, the less you're able to understand the world around you, being oblivious, and thus more capable of being unaffected and happy. Stupidity, means you are less able to distinguish things, in all manner, thus french food tasting like poo 8O , and since only dogs eat poo  , only stupid people like french food! Genius am I not?
Seriously, if you dont think that was funny, your in the wrong place   .
JH
Dont dis burger king! Besides, you got your facts wrong! We came up with pizza, beer (the good kind), strip clubs (eye candy counts as food), and Mcdonalds, which is truly our greatest achievement! Theres one in every country in the world and they all get Happy Meals!>
Post: bamboo:
Angry- With few exceptions such as steamwhisle, please don't even pretend that US beer is even close to what is produced elsewhere.
I just have to laugh

well i've only done karate at community college (instructor was up there though), and tai chi in china, though i only learned first 24 or so and i was alittle lazy. but i've got big plans for more.
there's places in this world i want to go, and they arn't normal ones my family wants me to do...not status quo. my father (i'm 20yr old if your wonderin') says i'm on the path to life's losers, and i don't doubt him, but but i have my hopes. i want to travel the world without a passport/visa and meet people. right now i don't know much, hence i'll be on the same path as life's losers, and if i don't get it together i'll be one of 'em.
in my life i don't doubt i'll run into trouble makers who want to fight, and probably i'll meet 'em before i can fight with any skill. i want to defend myself so it's a practical reason.
now launching into a fantasy...imagine your in an african jungle and someone's hunting you, maybe more than one guy. if your the scholar with glasses sayin' oh geebies...you might panic. but i'd like to avoid the spear in the back or at least get the pigmies to say damn, i liked him alittle.
this world is a confusing place and you can do ANYTHING you want...everything you think is important, well it's not...unless you make it. i don't need family and if i die well, i'm lookin' forward to it. my only goal is to be an old man when i grow up, because that's what happens and i think martial arts will help me 100%. i'd definitely like to avoid those fights in the future...but they're commin' and i want to be ready.
rant rant blah blah blah...sob sob. sorry fro the lifestory. i liked it though.>
Post: Gazelle:
Sorry, cassaruby, but had to laugh at that!
You are indeed right, we can do anything we want, however, whether you need family or not to do it, you might find that they help, a lot, generally. Be careful saying stuff like that round your parents, they might give you a talking to.>
