Orginal Post: MischievousBridge: hey everyone.. i am 19 years old and i studied tae kwon do when i was younger.. now i am looking to study a more practical and effective style of martial arts and i have narrowed it down between gracie brazilian jujitsu and krav maga. i have heard good thing about both but i want to know which would be most effective in real-world situations. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks...

Usually I'll be the first to say it's not the style, it's the fighter. That said, presented with these two arts, there's no decision to make: krav maga all the way. Krav maga was designed with self defence in mind, while BJJ is little more than a sport.
However, if you decide to go with krav maga, beware; the standard of teaching can vary immensely since it operates largely on a franchise scheme. There are good krav maga instructors out there, but there's a lot that suck too. If you find a school, make sure you go along and check out the training before you sign up for anything.>

For practical self defence I would say go for the best school nearest to you. Dont just look at BJJ but Judo and Traditional JiuJitsu too. Dont just look at KM but what about FMA or Systema etc?
Dont just go with the crowd, its about quality of instruction first!>

Systema?
I thought that Vladimir Vasiliev guy was a fraud.
Are there more instructiors of note?
I do like how Systema looks. Not that looks matter.
Any information would be of interest to me.>

I dont know anything about Systema, I just mentioned it off my head. Just trying to get him to do his own research rather than just going by what the trends are.>

Those two styles are two completely different styles. If you could, do both. But if you have to choose between the two, for self defense, no question that I would choose Krav Maga.
But Zefff's advice should be taken as well. Don't limit yourself to looking into just these two styles.>
