Orginal Post: kranker66: -I have a couple of questions about diet and hydration for those of you who do some intense training. At the school I train at they offer MT and BJJ, after MT class, BJJ starts up and goes for 2 hrs. some of the guys do 'doubles' meaning they go from MT on into BJJ- this makes a total of 3 hrs. of training.
-At some point I'll be doing it too, but I want to get an idea of what my body needs for fuel and hydration? Such as, how long before should I eat before hand? What are good things to eat and what are "no-no's"- this kind of stuff.
Any and all kind of tips appreciated.
Cheers

typically,an hour before working out is fine,a little more to be on the safe side(aka the non puking side),eat something high in carbs and maybe protein to keep yourself fueled up. a medium sized baked potato or a tuna sandwich works well for me. And drink lots of water before, during and after training.>

:arrowu: ...What about Gatorade and those 'sports' drinks, are they better than water? As we sweat our bodies loose more than liquids, ya know?
Cheers :D>

gatorade isn't bad,but personally it doesn't do anything for me.try it if you want.>

Personally, I think Gatorade is better than water when you are constantly sweating. It has different nutrients and electrolites that you need to replenish. Plus it tastes better. Water is still good though.>

I think gatorade is fine, although I prefer water, as it doesn't have the sugars (which aren't good for you). As far as eating carbs, that's a great idea, just be careful which carbs you consume. Stay away from sugars and white flour products (or at least this is what I do, maybe different for you). They seem to break down in your body faster (I know refined sugar does) and don't give you the long term energy that you need for a good 3 hour workout.>

:arrowu: ... I'm no nutritionist, but as I understand it there are 'good' sugars and there are 'bad' sugars. The human body does need sugar ( I don't exactly no what for? ), but if someone might explain about 'good' and 'bad' sugars that would be helpful.
Thanks for all the good points so far.
Cheers :D>

In a nutshell, the more natural sugars are better for you than refined, processed, added, etc. sugars. Example: fruit = good sugars, soda = bad sugars.>

:arrowu: ...Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. You make good points.>

Pardon me, I thought that "refined sugar" was implied in my post, however, let me make that clear here for everyone. I meant REFINED SUGAR.>
