What if there is a herniated disk involved? I have a brother with that problem, facing more surgery and he needs to stabilize his lower back. A good judoka who's been sidelined...>

See a doctor first and see what he recomends. Talking to a physical therapist would be best if you can get the referal for the insurance. It all depends on how severe the condition is. I wouldnt do deadlifts with a hernia until it was completely taken care of. He may be better using machines for his back if the doc's give him the ok to lift. I dont really know that much about lifting with back conditions.>

yeah man speak to a doctor/physio therapist. If your back's okay and you dont wish to use weights...actually i wouldn't like to use weights. But there's an exercise called superman. If you dont know how to do it. Just ask..but i'm sure you've heard of it.>

A common exercise that people fail to think will help their back is crunches. Strong abdominal muscles help in supporting the back. If you have a herniated disk, definitely see a doctor for their help.>

I might push a few buttons with this comment, but here it goes anyway: Drs dont' know jack about rehab. You need to see someone that specializes in rehab/exercises to get the right information. A doctor can tell you that you may need therapy, but they don't have a clue about what to do...that is why they SEND you to therapy instead of just showing what to do in the first place. Unfortunatly in this world of insurances, you have to see a Dr to see a therapist.
Anyway, I agree with the above, but don't forget about unilateral weight training. Hold a dumbbell in one hand instead of using a barbell and you can train the core to stabilize in multiple planes of movement.>
