Orginal Post: dscott: I have a few questions about stretching. Not just Martial Arts related however.
1. Can someone stretch too much?
2. Is it better for some people not to stretch at all before an activity?
The reason I ask is because I play softball and I stretch before, during and after each game. Somehow, I'm always pulling my hamstrings, quads & hip flexors. I've heard that you can over stretch and I've also heard that some people recommend not stretching at all before, only after the activity.
Post: BLACK PANTA:
You should only stretch to the point where you feel only slight discomfort, not pain. It could be a case where you may not be stretching properly. I mean no dis-respect, it's just that I dont know how you are stretching those muscles.
And how the hell can you pull your hamstring during SOFTBALL?!?!?! :? :D .>
Post: dscott:
Everyone always says that. "Softball's for girls". Whatever. It's the same running and catching and throwing as baseball, just a bigger ball. I think I just play too hard. :P
I know how to stretch. I've gone over different stretches with physical therapist and sports trainers that I know. I think I'm just more prone to pulling muscles. The sad thing is that I'm the only one on my team to stretch before the games and I'm in the best shape of anyone on my team (which isn't saying much). However, I'm always the one pulling something. It really pisses me off. It's a pain in the neck (or should I say leg)  ....... Sorry that was bad.>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
DScott buddy, I didn't mean it was for girls but you make a good point. It is for girls  what I meant is that there isn't much running in baseball. Are you running correctly? I know that sounds like a stupid question but it can make a difference. If you are running wrong then that could also be a factor. Also do you wear cleats. You do have to change the way you run (slightly) when wearing cleats.>
Post: dscott:
Yeah I wear cleats. I could be running wrong but I don't think so. I thinks it's because of the sprinting. I sprint to the bases, I sprint to catch the balls, etc....>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
yeah when sprinting you put alot more stress on your legs than you would jogging or something else. My reccomendation is more horse stances. Builds your leg muscles. Do you run on your toes or do you plant your feet when you run?>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
I'm going to move this to the body wieght exercises forum buddy.>
Post: dscott:
I was going to post in here but for some reason I didn't feel like it belonged here. Sorry.
Anyway, I would have to say that I run fairly normal. I'm not on my toes but I'm not flat foot. I just started back at the gym so I'm hoping that if I build up my leg and hip muscles that may help.>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
Well when sprinting run on the ball of your feet, basically your toes. You will find it's easier and you will actually run a bit quicker. Sprinters to this. Especially with cleats they are basically made for you to run on our toes. I would reccomend, if you can, to watch how baseball players run and how olympic sprinters run. You will gain technique from them. I run always on my toes. It's the way I trained to run when I did track and basketball. I played a bit of baseball, but I was a pitcher so, I didn't run much in that sport. Only running I did was when I was at bat. And still I didn't have to run cuz it was mostly out of the park  yeah right >
Post: dscott:
You mean you didn't have to run much while you were at bat because you would just walk back to the bench with your head hanging low. STRIIIIIIIIKE THREEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually now that I think about it, when sprinting I do run on the ball of my foot. I was thinking about jogging.>
Post: BLACK PANTA:
well just keep your mind on maybe seeing if you run wrong. Or if you stretch bad. You know the more muscle you have in your leg, the more chance you have of pulling it  Little ego booster for you
I would really reccomend speaking to your Sifu (teacher) about your leg muscles pulling when running and he/she may be able to assisst you with your stretching. I would also reccomend observing sprinters (like I said b4). If worse comes to worst, then maybe go to a specialist.>

hey... i was thinking that maybe it was what you ate. maybe your body doesn't have enough potassium, or water? when you stretch just hold each stretch for 30 seconds. i had a friend who strained a muscle stretching in yoga, and i gave him props for that cause it showed how hard he pushed himself... but yeah... it was still a bit too far. gl>
Post: dscott:
So potassium and water, huh? What about protein? I have to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I just pulled another muscle. It happens when I sprint. Will doing leg exercises and building up the muscle help or hinder?>
Post: confusingDot:
protien will definately help you heal any injuries, and help you grow more muscle. the leg excercises should definately help because it will will strengthen the muscle that you pull. tips such as these can only help you get closer to your potential, but because of genetics you may not be able to get that far within the area of stopping your muscles from getting pulled. i'm sorry, i hope that helps. oh yeah, and warm up before you stretch as well, just get yourself to start sweating (or when you feel warm enough) before you stretch, this will help the stretch be more effective. also stretch before and after working out.>
Post: binhdinhboy:
when you stretch, dont do it to the point of pain. i was once told that simply breaks them down and makes them grow back harder. ive found this to be generally true.>
Post: dscott:
I don't know. Maybe it is genetic. I stretch. I don't stretch too much. It's just frustrating  because I'm only 27 and I feel like an old man after every game. I feel like Bamboo.>
Post: civicboy:
Hi I was reading this forum about the guy who kept pulling his muscles in his legs and i have the same problem exactly with karate and im the one that works the hardest by far, do you think i should eat a couple bananas hour before class i try to drink as much water as possible thanx!!!>
Post: confusingDot:
NO WAY, not right before class, you just add it inot your regular meal... ok this part i'm not so sure about... i heard that apples have more potassium them bananas... that aprt i dont' knwoa bout. and it might be BECAUSE you work the hardest that you pull your muscles more. also don't stretch too ahrd as said before.>
Post: dscott:
I think I'm just going to have to accept the fact that I'm more prone to muscle pulls than the average person. I'll take the necessary precautions (stretch, drink water, etc...) but I'm just going to have to take it easy and not play 120% every time.>

I've done a little research and asked around and I'm starting to take Glutamine. About 1,000 mg/day. This won't really help with me actually pulling my muscles but it will help me recover. I'm also taking amino acids after I workout and play. I'm hoping all this helps me.>
