Orginal Post: Umy: I didnt know which part of the forum to put this in so ill just put it here.
I was wondering if there are any exercises that target the neck muscles specifically except bridges, isometric holds and those funky weight things ive seen wrestlers and boxers use:

And I was also wondering how many of you train your neck and whether or not you think people should bother doing so.
Ill just say since ive been bridging punches seem to hurt a lot less than before, which is something I was wondering if any of you have experienced, or maybe its just ive lost so many brain cells it doesnt matter anymore  .
Anyway interested on how you guys feel on the subject

I'm sure if you did shrugs and worked on your "traps" that would help support the neck. I had physical therapy on my neck and they had me sit in a chair, look straight forward and move my neck back. Do that at first without any resistance and then later add some resistance. Just my opinion though. I'm am definitely not a trainer or anything like that.>

some gyms actually have neck exericse machines, but i've never seen one in person.>
Post: Umy:
Yeah our gym doesnt have one of those but ive seen them before, never tried one though.>

i'm not sure if you do this already, but you can do the tripod with your head, and feet, and twirl your head around, and also remember to do it face up and face down. i never felt like i needed anything else other hten this. and hwen you're advanced enough switch from face up to face down and back up again without using any hands, just spin.>
Post: Umy:
you mean bridging?
I dont think im advanced enough to switch from face down to face up yet but ill have a go and tell you, if my necks still in one piece >

My opinion from a fighting prespective is you cannot strengthen the neck in a pure physichal way to sustain any sort of attack, only through hard chi excercises,
if when your head is hit you try to resist and hold it still you will just cause more damage because now you are taking all the force from the hit.
but then if you dont hold it togather it can crack your spine if it flies too far back,
but im by no means talking from an experienced point of view.>
Post: confusingDot:
there are more options then you give. you move with the hit, so it doesn't hit as hard, bu tyou might be moving away so that you don't get hit at all as well. and there are still some of us who don't believe in chi yet. it's not just relaxing, or tightening the muscles in your neck.
witht he briding, you don't need to switch from back to front yet, but what you can do just do the bridging you're talking about, which will get you to be able to switch from back to front and front to back. whcih means thatyou can improve quite far iwth briding. plus i know that i would be able to advace quite further then waht i did after i was abe to switch back and forth.>

- For gaining neck strenghth, you might try this...
(1) squat down, cup you hands, now place your chin into your cupped hands.
-The exercise is an UP and DOWN motion and torso movement side-to-side.
(2) with your chin, push down into your palms (Downward resistance), with your cupped palms push upwards on your chin( Upward resistance). Now move your torso side-to-side.
-You should feel resistance on the upward and downward movements.
I hope I explained that well.
Cheers.>

Also work your jaw by chewing something tough. I believe some of the old school boxers use to do this (Marciano). Bridgeing is the way to go for the neck. Ease into it and be carefull. If you are new to bridgeing use your hands for support (both for front and back bridges). Forget about machines for one they are dangerous to the neck and two are less effective IMO.>

Ive worked my neck via bridges, neck machines ... and using towels for resistance. I go through spurts where I will train it ... and not train it for a while.
I believe it saved me once ....
In my 'younger' days ... I was celebrating graduating my military school with honors ... so we had a pool party ... wild time ....
Anyways .... I dont remember the end of the night. Next day I wake up and my neck is sore. My friends looked at me in surprise ... asking if I remembered the night before.
I said no .... what happened ?
They said some guy didnt like me .... and out of a hand shake, he through me into a whizzer ... with my head landing at an awkward angle on the concrete sidewalk !!! Everyone said they 'felt' the impact and thought I was severely injured.
They said I unnaturally jumped back up in the guys face stating he was lucky I was drunk ..... LMAO. .... and I dont remember one bit of it .... so sad :(
One of my learning experiences to not overdue it with the alcohol ... but also showing me why it could be a good idea to train your neck.
Just some food for thought . . .
Humbly,>

There's a pretty good article in this month's Blackbelt Magazine. If I remember, I'll try to copy it and post it.>
It was a good article with Renzo, talking about using the neck as a "third arm".>
