Orginal Post: kranker66: -I understand that a person's BMI (Body Mass Index), is the best way to test for body fat?
My question is, how is this done and is it expensive to do?

all comments welcomed.

Cheers.

I don't know how accurate this is but here you go:

'dscott'
-Thanks for that link. Yeah, I don't know how acurate it is either.
There is no bone density test, which would give 'tru-er' idea of an individuals BMI.

Cheers :D>

Post: dscott:

Just do a google search. That's all I did. I'm sure that link will give you a close enough idea.>

...Yeah that's what I'm afraid of...I did my BMI >

Post: dscott:

Me too.>

Post: kranker66:

"Forget it! The test must be rigged!"....I can't trust tests made up by 'The Man'.

Cheers >

Post: BLACK PANTA:

Hey my BMI is normal. 23.1 baby. I am normal weight yaye >

Post: NeverMan:

Yeah, these tests are just a "close and average estimate". They in no way represent every individual. Most professional athletes get their BMI by using a boyancy technique, it is much more accurate.>

Post: Stg:

you can't count on internet bmi tests because they won't know the difference between muscle mass and bodyfat. they write everything off as fat so if a muscular guy uses it he comes out with a "fat boy" rating.

besides bmi's aren't the best way to measure your bodyfat percentage. bfat caliper tests are. you can get one at any fitness store/have it done for you at a gym.>

Post: 8LimbsScientist:

What do you all think of those electrical impedence devices? You just grip the handles and it comes up with a body fat percentage based on an impulse through your body?

Edit:

Just tried it. Woohoo! Apparently I'm overweight. I'm excited because I am in great shape and have very little actual body fat. Being "overweight" with abs is pretty cool. Its all muscle baby!>

Post: Stg:

electrical ones aren't too great either. especially the weight scales with an electronic bf measure device- they always come out too high.>

Post: The BadBoy:

BMI is a load of crap, don't go with it. Get either a water imersion test, which is expensive or get a skin fold test, if your at uni and they're anything like mine then they'll do it for you for nothing. My local sports centre will do a fitness test including skin fold thickness for abot £15.>

Post: dscott:

What's the point of doing any of this? You can just look in the mirror and see if you're fat or not? Why do you need to know what percentage of body fat you have?>

Post: Gong||Jau:

People who appear to be skinny can have high body fat percentages simply because they have more fat than muscle. Likewise, other people can appear to be fat but in reality be mostly muscle, albeit without the definition of a bodybuilder or a cardio athlete.>

Post: Stg:

exactly. why should you want to know your bf%? because it's nice to do measurements to know how far you're coming along,or exactly how much work you have left to do.>
