Should I lose weight ?

Orginal Post: 4: I'm thinking of entering a comp in about 6 months time and i have a problem, I weigh 80 Kilos, or 175 lb's. this puts me right in the middle of the middle weight weight class. I don't mind fighting people a bit bigger but the upper limit for the weight is 180 or 185, and weight is made at your gym up to a 3 days in advance. this will give people time to cut weigh and so a guy of 185 lbs can weigh 190 even 195 lbs. so is it worth me fighting in the welter weight All i have to do is lose 6 lbs at the most ?
any advice or help would be cool

From a noncompetitive point of view:
Enter the competition without winning or losing in mind, just learning.
If you fight guys bigger than you you will learn something valuable. If its simply a trophy you want then do what it takes to win, but being better in the long run only happens when you compete with the odds stacked against you.

Man your lucky you even have weight classes!!
At the state championship I was matched up with this 270 pound teenager (I way about 120). From my own expirience I would tell you that winning hardyl even matters. In fact when I lose I become a better fighter becuase I'll watch that fight over and over again and look for things that I should have improved.>

If you are serious about competing in that sort of environment and want to succeed in that sort of environment, lose the wieght. 6 lbs is easy to lose, and with 3 days in advance is plenty of time to get rehydrated/refueled.
Although, I have to agree with the posts above. If you are looking for better fight experience, fight bigger opponents.
BTW: 6 months away? That should be enough time to put some weight (muscle) on if you want to compete in the upper class, you should be able to get to 180-185 if you take weight training seriously over the next 6 months. This would be my recommendation. Put on some weight (muscle) and go with the heavier weight class of the two.>

Thanks for the advice people. The problem with putting on weight is that i can't. I've tried just about every thing I mean the only reason i do MMA is because I became to small for rugby. But with every thing as a whole i think that this being my first real comp and all just to try my best and let what ever happens happen, if i end up fighting some one a bit bigger than so be it just got be better than he is.>

whats the best way to cut weight ? just have a huge crap, take a piss and work out in big warm clothing till you sweat it out right ? but people say that if you don't do it right then you get gased faster, so can some one just run it past me quickly but kepping all the important bits in like what best to eat drink after cutting weight.

If you want to do it right and in the healthiest way possible, go to your doctor and tell him what it is you want to do and ask for his suggestion.
There are two ways to lose weight for something. The first way is to alter your diet and do a lot of exercise. The second, less healthy way is to procrastinate until three days before the competition, workout for a few hours a day in a sweatsuit, barely eat anything and don't drink water the night before the comp, and then load up on carbs and water between weigh ins and the start. Don't do this. This will murder your body and definitely adversely affect your performance.>

ok,first thing's first: sweating is NOT losing weight. sweating is just water being expelled from your body,you can be sweating bullets,it doesn't mean you're losing weight.adversly,you could be working out and not sweating at all,it doesn't mean that you AREN'T losing weight :D

you got that right,the part about not eating anything and not drinking water is indeed murder,you're starving your body which makes it cling on to bodyfat longer and for the water bit,putting yourself at great risks for dehydration(especially if you workout while not taking in water).
also loading up carbs and water like what you said bloat will the shit out of you,highly unreccommened,where'd you get that stuff from? nice to see that you know it's improper to do :thumbsup: :D>

I wrestled in high school :mrgreen:. I know it's not really losing weight per se, but I've seen plenty of people do it when they panic and realize that they have to make weight for a tournament the coming weekend. They get so hungry that they load up on anything they can get their hands on after weighing in. Our team used to go to Denny's in the few hours before matches would start.>

I think that I'm just goona go try and loss the 6lb its not much and i can do it. if not then I'll not to bad as i just found out its a shoot fighting comp, no punching to the head so if he is bigger than me then he wont be able to use that advantage. his KO power is useless and on the ground i trian BJJ with people 14 st.>
