Orginal Post: xcal: Hi all,

What is your opinion on taking suppliments like 'muscle food', or weight loss stuff to supplement your training?

I view most Chinese and Japanese MA's as a blend between the physical and philosophical aspects. Seeing as I'm training i Chinese MA, I'm throwning this question into this forum. MODs: short of throwing the same question in the Japanese MA forum, can you make this thread available in both?

I'm trying to turn this into a poll, what is the 'poll option'???

I too like to drink Slimfast before training. It's got a ton of nutrients and it doesn't taste that bad anymore. They're actually pretty good. Plus they're not too filling that they would bog you down but they're filling enough to hit the spot.>

I've been a vegetarian for about 4 years now. When I'm training hard or trying to bulk up, I actually do drink some protein shakes where the protein source is soy or whey concentrate.

SlimFast story> I tried drinking it for a week during wrestling season when I needed to cut some serious weight (right after thanksgiving :) ) I guess it had WAY more fiber than my body was used to, because after the second day I had mad Mud Butt. I probably lost more weight running suicide sprints from the couch to the bathroom. :)>

Cytogainer is a good product. If you really want to get swoll then there?s Muscle Milk (made by the same ppl as Cytogainer). Only thing about Muscle Milk that I don?t like (and why I don?t use it) is that it has creatine in it. I?m not familiar with the effects of creatine so I?m not going to say don?t use it, but I don?t.
If all you?re doing is Chinese MA (I?m assuming Gong Fu) then I?d recommend looking into Cytogainer. It has a lot of protein and a good mix of vitamins. Plus it tastes pretty good.
On the weight loss side of your question, I?d say don?t use them?.ever, unless it has been prescribed by a doctor (MD, not nutritionist). The best, and safest, way to lose weight is a healthy diet and plenty of exercise.>

Sorry but being a vegan does not mean you need suppliments.
[/quote

Buddy, I didn't say you NEED to suppliment. I said I reccomend...you know seeing I am a know-it-all....lol. But I have heard of soo many vegans complaining about how they can't bulk up, or their doctors saying they're iron deficiant. I guess as you say they are prob following a bad vegan diet. Not all vegans are the same, and you may eat well as a vegan but others may not. It's like us meat eaters, we all, in fact the majority of us dont eat well. We can't paint everyone with the same brush lol (always wanted reason to use that line).

Another thing I've noticed about vegans is that they dont eat a variety of veggies. I mean i can see why cuz some veggies are bitter and taste horrid. Different veggies have different nutrients and work the body differently. I have also read that not cooking your veggies is the ideal way to eat them. Also where ever possible, not peeling them is also. In that same article I've read that eating veggies/fruits is great for loosing weight, becasue if you do eat well as a vegan you're more energetic, healthier and slimmer than us meat eaters. Mainly because you just eat less mass, but get the same amount of nutrition, some cases more. The article also said that for most beginners of a veggie diet they should supliment with protien and multi vitamins.

Again buddy, it's good you eat well, and you dont have to suppliment, but not all of us have the dedication and love for our green snacks.>

I've noticed that with Slim Fast, you really have to get a lot of water in when you drink that. I prefer the brands Boost and Ensure, I'm not sure if it's in the States, but those two are great meal replacements. Only 240 calories in a can tho.>

I've heard alot of stories like this but I've never had it happen to me. I'm not sure why not.>

my question was actually directed towards muscle building stuff....like creatine. The www.usn.co.za set of products is VERY HIGHLY XTREMLY popular here in South Africa. Just the first page of that website is mind-boggling in its variety of products.

The discussions that came up(while I was sleeping) are nevertheless very interesting:-) I'm with Bamboo on this one. Being a meat eater means that I should not have any dietary difficiencies...assuming of course that I eat a healthy mix of foods. I can't say that I get a good balance everyday, but definitely do well during most of the week. I go for the 'rainbow' approach. i.e. eat something of every colour everyday...I mentioned it in a bit more detail in another thread somewhere here. Being a vegan means that Bamboo has to work much harder than I do to ensure a balance in his diet!

My reason for this question is perhaps one of of jealousy:-( I'm training for just over 2 years and have worked really hard for the results that I've seen. i.e. fitness, fatness(or lack of it), strength, some good looking muscles etc. My Bro-in-law has started weight lifting and is on a host of the USN products for a few months. He has already shown almost as much visible improvement as I have!!!! except he refuses to spar, play squash, or run with me ;-)

I personaly (at this moment) believe that my hard work has taught me some respect for my body, and I do not expect to ever slide back to the ridiculous fatness/fitness levels of 2 years ago. Whereas the quickfixers have not learnt this lesson.

I guess this is somewhat similar to the question of carrying a gun...Quickfix or Hard Work? btw: yes, I train in Kung Fu.

BP: is your sig a deliberate pun, or merely an incorrect spelling of Lose? loose clothing=good weight loss;-)

XCAL> The thing you can never forget is that more than hardwork, more than supplements, more than even diet, HEREDITY is the key factor. Good genes overcome all else. Some people can make rapid gains in lean muscle mass without even trying that hard just because. Your Brother-in-Law's results are probably much less due to his use of supplements than they are due to his body chemistry. It also depends on how developed you were previously, and how long of a hiatus you took from excercising.>

Post: V-for-Vendetta:

My 2 cents: use the creatine. I don't think there's a better natural supplement out there on the market today for building lean mass and increasing your strength then creatine. And for the muscle recovery, L-Glutamine. Personally, my supplement routine is:

1. Multi-Vitamin
2. 5g of Creatine after workout
3. 5 g of Glutamine after workout
4. 40 g of whey protein after workout

I fit all this into eating every 3 hours and combining quality carbs and protein at almost all six meals except for my last meal of the day which is primarily protein. This routine is what keeps me ripped and growing. I highly recommend it to everyone :)>
