| This is a practice we've been working on for the last few months, in yet another attempt to understand Aikido's proper context. In this practice we are using oak bokken, with fencing masks, do and kote. The person getting hit decides when they have been struck in a way that would have stopped them from continuing. Clinching, grabbling, thrusts and strikes to the head, body and wrists are all allowed.
In a practice like this, you can see where wrist grabs have great importance, and why they may play such a prominent roll in the Aikido syllabus. Also if you are familiar with the Iwama bokken work, you will notice many movements particular to that style of Aikido, such as the 7th suburi and the first kumi tachi, there are also many examples of the ikkyo principle- ippon dori in live action. This is yet another attempt to understand the Aikido syllabus.
