In this video Joel Reeves describes the finer points of the corkscrew punch as it is practised within the Shuri-Te based styles of Okinawan karate. More info at: sippingti The corkscrew punch is said to have been developed by Anko Itosu, a teacher of the famous karate master Gichin Funakoshi who introduced the art to the mainland of Japan in the 1920's. Here, Joel explores the possibility of the karate punching technique as having developed directly from an aristocratic staff-fighting art called Yamane Ryu bojutsu. With demonstrations of the unique 'bouncing' and 'sliding' techniques peculiar to that style. Via his teacher Higa Kiyohiko of the Bugeikan dojo in Okinawa, Joel is able to trace his lineage in the Yamane ryu system directly back to the arts founder Chinen Sanda. It is said that Chinen developed his stick-fighting technique from older relatives and a blend of spear-fighting techniques (sojutsu) possibly from teachers in Taiwan, China. okinawan martial arts Traditional Martial Arts Style
