WHAT THE HECK IS PANKRATION?????
From Wikipedia...Two athletes competing in the pankration. Panathenaic amphora, made in Athens in 332-331 BC, during the archonship of Niketes. From=Capua; Focus=Hybrid;Country of origin= Ancient Greece;Olympic sport Ancient Olympic Games
Pankration was a martial art introduced into the Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC and founded as a blend of boxing and wrestling but without any rules. The term comes from the Ancient Greek , literally meaning "all powers" from πᾶν (pan-) "all" + κράτος (kratos) "strength, power". Spartan soldiers were taught to use this ancient boxing technique with the sole purpose of fighting and killing on the battlefield. For that reason, Spartans were not allowed to participate in any boxing competition including other Greeks.Modern mixed martial arts competitions have come to feature many of the same methods that were used in pankration competitions in the ancient Greek world.
According to the US Amateur Fight League, Modern Pankration is a safe sport suitable for competitors of all ages from all styles of Martial Art. Rules emphasize technique and sportsmanship. The US Amateur Fight League provides the safest and most progressive route to prepare for real combat or professional fighting career.
Rules are progressive and consistent for each level of combat:
"C" Class rules consist of FILA style Grappling.
"B" Class rules allow Grappling combined with Limited contact strikes.
"A" Class rules allow Grappling combined with Full contact strikes.
Our athletes have an opportunity to compete at the Local, State, National and World Level. FILA is the International Governing Body for Pankration, Grappling and Combat Grappling and represents the sport in all Olympic matters. USA Pankration is the sole United States representative to the World Pankration Committee and FILA.
